TGIF! 5 Random Things That Will Make You Smile

Let's face it. There's been a lot of heavy stuff on everyone's minds this week. I've been sitting in front of this blank template trying to prepare my Friday 5 post and I just can't seem to settle on a topic. It's pouring rain and I've already done a weather whining post this week. In fact, I've written 2 of them. This is a running blog and I don't want to do politics here, although can I just say: Whoa. It's been a week. I've had some personal stuff to deal with too, but I'm going to keep it just that, personal.

My goal for my Friday 5 posts is usually to keep them light and breezy. So for today, I'm going to share 5 random things that made me smile. They're even sort of running related! No matter what is happening around us, no matter how bad it might make you feel, laughter is still the best medicine. This nurse practitioner is prescribing a dose of humor.

1. The Soccer World Cup has been going on this week. I don't follow soccer, but I can appreciate an athletic physique! If you want more, BuzzFeed has plenty.

2.  Funny story from work: A mom called for an appointment to bring her 11 month old in because she found what she thought was a worm in the child's diaper. While we talked about it in the office and the unlikelihood of an 11 month old having worms, the mom called back to say that the worm was actually dental floss...

And the next day while running, I saw this bag sitting on someone's front porch.
Hopefully, it was for feeding birds and not being used as a snack food...

3. Were you as captivated as I was by the story of the raccoon who scaled the building in St Paul, Minnesota? So.many.thoughts. Do raccoons have regrets? Once he started to climb, there was no turning back...No DNF for that guy...

As a person who paraphrases songs all the time, I can appreciate this take on AC/DC's It's a Long Way to the Top...
4. A few weeks ago, I turned on my favorite local morning news and caught a great interview with Galen Rupp, who is running the Chicago Marathon. Prior to this, I had heard that he wasn't the most personable athlete, but I found him to be really cute and engaging! He presented one of the anchors with a medal for running a 1k. Inside joke, the male anchors always tease her about her lack of exercise and love for cocktails, so she ran a 1k. Video from WGN news.

5. And finally, in case you all were wondering why I love doing inversions so much:
How was your week? Anything funny to share? Did you see the raccoon story? Inversions, yay or nay? Are you watching the World Cup? Who are you rooting for?

I'm linking up with Fairytales and Fitness and Running on Happy for the Friday Five. Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Did anyone NOT see the racoon, LOL? Tenacious little bugger!

I haven't worked on inversions in a long, long time. I really need to get back to that.

My week, yeah, also personal stuff, not so good, but not ready to share yet either. Weekend is looking up, though! Except for the most likely rainy solo long run. That I'll share on Sunday. :)

  2. LOL on the yoga meme - now you know the real reason I've been tackling headstands. :-)

  3. Haha! Love (and can identify with) the cartoon. The Galen Rupp story reminded me of the time I went to a pasta dinner before a half marathon. The speaker was this young guy who had just run a half in under an hour. He looked sooo young, and I thought he would not be a good speaker. He blew the whole room away with his speech. His name - Ryan Hall!

  4. I did follow the raccoon story and I was cheering him on, lol.
    And...I'm not a soccer fan but I feel like I could be...hahaha

  5. I can certainly appreciate a nice athletic physique too! We are not THAT old yet right? lol. If I thought those hand stands would help with gravity maybe I would learn how to do them. Thanks for the smile :) Have a nice weekend

  6. Well, avoidance is my key solution to dealing with all the news. That said, I don't watch the news very often, so I had not seen or heard of the raccoon. We did have one attempting to set up homestead in the shop at my work recently...fortunately, we live-trapped him and set him free. I had a tough time coming up with a post for Friday as well. I also chose to go with a "happy" theme ;-)

    1. I actually enjoyed the raccoon story. It was such a nice diversion from all the horrific stuff going on.

  7. I'm not s soccer fan so I don't keep up with that. Actually I don't think I've watched any TV this summer yet. I'm really into my audio books so I walk around all day with my earbuds in...haha

  8. Where have I been? Haven't heard the raccoon story.

    No one inversions.

    Like your happy theme!

    Something funny...well not so funny.

My cat was crying in the middle of the night so I got up to see what she wanted. I didn't put on my glasses on and saw why I thought was a black scrunchy on the stairs so I picked it up..... not a scrunchy but a dead little mouse. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. I think the exact same of my boobs when I'm doing down dog in yoga!

yes on the soccer teams!! I was admiring the Brazil team butts earlier today.

  10. So, maybe I'm the only one who didn't see the raccoon story. What hole have I been hiding in?

I hadn't heard that about Galen but that interview was really nice! He definitely seems personable there. I love watching him run! Have been a fan of his for a while.

    I don't do soccer so I won't be watching. It's not a sport I ever got into.

Funny from the week? Hmmm...... watched my oldest grandson earlier this week and when my daughter and son-in-law came to pick him up, I walked outside with them. While we were out there, he took one look at me and said, "go back in the house, Nannie" and pointed towards the door. Well, I guess he'd had enough of me! LOL

  11. I heard about that raccoon, and my aunt said one of her husband's nieces works in that building. It's been relocated outside of the city, and I wouldn't be surprised if it returned.
Soccer players have good butts too.

  12. It's been a real fun week around here - I had my first colonoscopy yesterday {insert sarcasm.} Just as everyone says, the prep is a lot worse than the procedure! Plus not being able to have more morning coffee may have made me a little grumpy. Thankfully my colon is healthy so I'm good for another 10 years.

    1. I need to do that but I don't want to. I had one when I was 40 and it's not something I want to prepare for again. Who's got time for that?

  13. Lol at the floss "worm". I remember one of my brothers having a diaper full of Perler beads when he was a baby. I guess kids have resilient digestive systems!

I prefer lazy inversions currently. Legs up the wall is technically an inversion....

  14. I heard about the raccoon but haven't actually seen the story - guess I should GTS, right?

  15. LOL I feel like the floss thing is something that would happen to me. I'm happy to say it hasn't yet though. One of my kids stuck play-dough in her ear one time while she was at nursery and since I didn't know that she had been playing with play dough I thought it was a huge ball of wax and so did her dr (it was yellow/orange in color). a year later it was still there so the pediatrician took it out. Yep, calcified play dough. haha

    1. You should see the stuff I see in kids' ears! Glitter is a big one. Kind of funny.

  16. We get some pretty funny stuff in the ER sometimes but haven't had a dental floss in the diaper. We've had Polly Pocket shoe in the nose (same kid twice in 1 day).
Not much of a soccer fan either but...oh my!
    Thanks for making me smile!

    1. Yep, we once had a kid with a Barbie Shoe in her vajayjay... kids do the strangest things. Of course, so do adults but I don't work with them...

  17. Haha! I wonder if that's why I've been so into handstands lately... ;)

  18. Ha - no 5 made me laugh - when I do an inversion, my bosoms get really into the gravity thing and try to smother me!

I'm glad Galen Rupp is a nice guy. He's our Mo Farah's training partner and races with him a lot (or was, maybe, now Mo's moved).

    1. Mo's running Chicago too! Maybe Galen had something to do with it?

    2. Oh, I imagine so! I cried when I saw Mo running London in April. Actually cried. Just to see him.

  19. I posted that buzzfeed article because, as we all know, we need a brain break. I think that is why I've been posting so much to FB about random silliness from my and Em's day--my attempt to bring some humor to the day

  20. It was certainly a heavy week for sure.
I did not see about the racoon, but now I will look it up!
I am a fan of Galen! Fun to see the interview.
    That is hilarious yoga meme!!!
I have not seen any of the world cup, and might watch some, but have been too busy to think about it!
