A Little Bump on the Road to Recovery

I've been doing so well on the road to recovery that I was surprised to hit a little bump this week. On Saturday I woke up in a world of hurt with a full-blown RA flare. Actually, I had trouble sleeping because I could not get comfortable. I thought about getting up for some ibuprofen but it seemed like too much work at 2 am.

The last time this happened was 2 weeks after my second dose of the COVID vaccine. Two weeks ago, I received my 3rd dose of the COVID vaccine. Coincidence? I'm sure not. I'm just hoping that this flare will be short-lived. And that it doesn't interfere with my recovery.

Timing is everything and with the not-so-great weather this weekend, we stayed home from the lake. That gave me time for guilt-free rest on the couch, watching the Wisconsin Badgers play football, catching up on blogs, and reading.

Stationary Cycling

The mornings are cooler now and I took advantage of that, riding my bike in the trainer out on the deck. I picked another tough GCN 30 minute HIIT ride. I was alternately amused and annoyed by the comments from the people in the video. I mean, if it's that hard of a workout, how is it possible for a rider to blather on and on about the workout? In spite of that, it was a great, kick-butt workout.

Walking

Wednesday was a perfect late summer day and I took my feet to the trails, where I once again walked the yellow trail loop for 6 miles. Mother Nature brought the yellow foliage--everywhere I looked, there was yellow. It was just lovely! As my foot continues to heal, I'm hoping to start to venture onto the single track. I'm looking forward to seeing the colors of fall!

I woke up early Friday to get a 4 mile walk in before work. I caught a beautiful sunrise and it was a peaceful start to what was a ridiculously busy day in the office. Call me exhausted.

On Sunday, I woke up to bright sunshine, cool temperatures, and no pain! I laced up my shoes and headed to the bike path for a fast-paced 5 mile walk. I ran into a friend, who told me I was 'looking strong'. Music to my ears! Soon, running shoes, soon...

Strength Training

Yes, strength sessions with SJ are back!!! She did not go easy on me and I didn't want her to. She started me out with 3 rounds of Russian KB swings 50#, heavy bag holds for 30 seconds, and walking shoulder presses with swinging dumbbells. After that I did assisted strict pullups alternating with seated shoulder presses. It felt so good to be lifting heavy sh** again! I was also glad to find out that I haven't lost much strength during my time off.

Coming Up...

While the foot continues to heal, I'm not ready to return to the WOD or running yet. Fortunately, the CF box is starting a hypertrophy strength cycle next week. I'll be doing that instead of the WOD. The pool opens back up next week, so I'll be doing at least one Fluid Running Session. Walking will continue too. I might be flaring, but I'm not going to let it stop me from doing what I can do!

How was your week? Have you ever been annoyed by an instructor or participant in one of your video workouts? Any signs of fall? What do you have coming up next week?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. There is definitely a tinge of fall in the air now. I am loving the cool nights and mornings as well as the lower humidity. Sorry about the flare. xo

  2. I am so glad to see you back at the gym and I know how much you enjoy those workouts. Your recovery seems to be going really well (except for that flare up). Must be great to be back on the trails too!

  3. I hope the flare is over quickly! Personally I'm really crossing my fingers that they decide no booster for Moderna because both did a real number on me.

You look really strong in the photo at your gym!

    1. Well, you don't have to get the booster! Personally, I'd rather have the side effects than COVID.

  4. Ha ha, that's one of the reasons I don't do many workout videos LOL I'm a huge fan of the vintage P90X series, but some of the "chatter" is really annoying. While I have no personal experience with RA, I've seen what it's done to others, most recently my BIL. It's great that you're active and able to keep it at bay.

  5. Hope that flare goes away quickly. We're a long way from Fall - triple digits today. But my SIL sent Les some pumpkin pie coffee from their local roaster and it is outstanding, so we'll just pretend!

I wasn't annoyed, but I lost it doing a plank during a yoga video this week. The instructor has an Eastern European accent and her voice is usually calm and soothing. Right in the middle of the plank she said, "This is hard y'all!" in a somewhat Southern accent. It struck me as hilarious for some reason. Some of the GCN instructors are better than others, but they all talk a lot ;)

    1. That's hilarious! The GCN video instructor was fine, but one of the riders is an instructor and OMG he would not shut up.

  6. Yes, I'm sure it was from the shot! Maybe knowing that is a good thing- it's not from anything you did and it should be short-lived. And it's not like your foot relapsed in any way- that recovery is still on track.
Other than this glitch it sounds like things are going well! You're out on the trails and back in the gym- all good things.

  7. I think it depends from the shot. I am sure you will get well soon.
You are working hard and I am sure that your first run is on the corner!
Here it's not "fall weather" yet but it cooled down and the shorter days help a lot to forget the heat waves.

  9. Sorry about the flare- interesting that the vaccine seems to have triggered it. But glad you were still able to get the booster! My mom is immuno compromised and received a booster from her doctor, I'm so glad.

I'm not surprised you didn't lose strength during your time off, you were still incredibly active! hope your foot continues to heal smoothly.

    1. I guess the vaccines fire up my immune system, which leads to an uptick in RA symptoms. Thankfully it seems to have subsided already.

  10. So great that you were able to go back to strength training with your coach this week - I know you missed it!

Sorry to hear about the RA flare, but glad that it was short lived. It's interesting how everyone reacts to the vaccine. For me I didn't have any typical side effects with the second shot, but I did notice my seasonal allergies were awful about a week later so I'm sure there's a link there.

  11. Nothing holds you back...broken bones, RA... you are strong!

I do find some of the Peleton instructors annoying... I want to say Shut up and let me hear the music.

I hope I can get the booster. Even with side effects. Seriously? I rather be protected.

  12. Oh, I hope the RA settles down soon. Yay on getting back to strength with Sammy Jo — I’m sure that feels good mentally as well as physically.

  13. We're having a heatwave at the moment, while orange leaves drift down. 80 degrees today - not fair!

  14. Relived that the flare seemed to resolve itself quickly and so glad you're able to be active in spite of the foot. Officially jealous of your trail access now that I had a weekend of it myself. Humans are not meant for endless concrete.

  15. Hmmm. Not a fair question. I'm annoyed by most things these days.

I'm so sorry about your RA flare. I'm glad it cleared up quickly, but I also know that it's frustrating when it happens. That being said, I'm sure a weekend on the couch did you a world of good.

I'm proud of all your hard work!

  16. I don't do videos except for Pilates, where the only annoyances I sometimes have is, how can they be so perky while doing all these planks? Haha. Glad you got your 3rd dose. I will be in line for it when I'm eligible. My county is terrible as far as vaccination status. So many people refusing to get it.
