Be Careful What You Wish For

I haven't been minding our mild winter at all. But I was hoping for a little snow- just to make things pretty and wintery. I should have known better because as extreme as the weather has been the past couple of years, at the end of this week, we got hit with a really wild snowstorm. Friday morning began with about 6 inches of heavy, wet snow and wind that chased me back inside before I could even start my run. As the morning went on, it changed to rain, turning the snow into slush, changing back to snow again, dropping about 4 more inches on top of the slush overnight. The wind continued, and during the day on Saturday, the temperatures began to drop.  It's going to be cold and windy for the next few days, which means most likely I'll be spending quality time with my TM.

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: Trail Sisters run 6 miles
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: run 10 miles
Thursday: CrossFit
Friday: treadmill run 6 miles
Saturday: snowshoeing

I was excited to meet up with the Trail Sisters on Sunday at one of the local preserves. The trails were covered with snow, but it wasn't too deep. As we always do, we split up into groups according to pace. Our group ran at a conversational pace, which fit nicely with my goals.

Monday's CrossFit workout was a Metcon--a CF Open workout from a few years ago. I'm sharing the graphic from the website instead of writing it out in a paragraph: (and yes, we all were wondering about those BJs)

This 8 minute AMRAP was as tough as it looked. I did the masters workout and made it to the 135# deadlifts, but could only complete 11 before time was called. Those box jumps really slowed me down. We finished with a post-metcon workout: 5 rounds, 30 seconds on, 15 seconds rest of Mountain Climbers, Superman scissor kicks, and bag/bear hug hold (I subbed planks).

After looking at the weekend's forecast of subzero temperatures--I guess El NiƱo has moved on--I decided to do my long run on Wednesday morning. The conditions for this run weren't optimal either--we had a snowstorm on Tuesday--but I figured with temperatures in the 30s, I should get this 10 miler done. The trails and bike paths were all snow and ice packed, so it was to the roads for me. It's been a long time since I've done a long run on the roads, but I dialed into my slow, steady 10 m/m pace and weaved my way around the neighborhoods where I live. I did a great job maintaining this pace, save for the few passages where I had to deal with ice/snow. I wore my Brooks Ghost GTX and my feet stayed warm and dry!

With SJ recovering from her ACL repair (she's doing great!), I signed up for the WOD on Thursday. This was a fun one-- we started off with a group warmup for the Power Snatch Drop Sets workout. Basically, we built to a heavy weight that we could snatch 2-3 times with good form. For me, this was 50#. From there, we dropped the weight incrementally--I dropped 5 pounds from my bar each time--and increased the number of reps until we couldn't do any more. When I was done, I ended up with 20# on my bar and did 15 reps. I probably could have done more, but my heart was pounding! We finished up with a short MetCon, a 7 minute AMRAP of 5-10-15-20-25 wall balls alternating with slam balls. I made it through the first 4 rounds and was starting on my wall balls for round 5 when time was called.

When I woke up Friday morning, I was excited to see that despite the fresh snow we had received overnight, the roads were clear! After a cup of coffee, I got myself dressed to run. When I got outside, the road was no longer clear--there were 2 inches of fresh snow. The wind was whipping, and I started to think that maybe running outside wasn't such a good idea. I went back inside, changed into shorts and a tank, and fired up the treadmill. I just could not settle into a groove, wishing I could have run outside. Still, I got it done. When I left for work, there were 6 inches of snow on the road and I knew I made the right decision.

My office closed at noon on Friday and when I arrived home, I tacked the driveway. Shoveling 6 inches of slushy snow for over an hour has to count as a strength workout! I skipped my strength workout on Saturday, planning on taking a rest day, but the lure of the snow was too much. I took my snowshoes to the trails and did a 3 mile loop. It's quite a workout!

Good news!

I'm happy to share that I've been invited to join the Brooks Running Collective for 2024! This is the new iteration of the Brooks Run Happy Team and will be my 3rd year with the team. Not knowing what, if anything, the rebranding would change, I was excited to be asked back. Our first town hall meeting is coming up and we should learn more about the plans for the upcoming year. For this seasoned runner, the enthusiasm of the team continues to fuel my love for running!

How was your week? Are you experiencing extreme weather? Have you every tried snowshoeing? Are you training for any races? Any good news this week?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. You all sure did get a nice a hit of winter this week! Way to get your long run done early. I am also hoping for at least one pretty snow here. We may have a chance this week but who knows? For now, we have cold wind. I have a pair of snowshoes that I would love to use!

    1. I'm feeling sore after yesterday's snowshoeing! I guess I used new muscles, lol

  2. Weird. I was just writing a post and I think it disappeared? Anyway, sorry about the snow interfering this week -- and yes, I've heard (but never tried) snow shoeing is quite the workout.

    1. Now it's the cold that's interfering! I hate being stuck inside.

  3. That snow is pretty! We’ve had so much rain we are thinking of getting Scooby a raincoat. He doesn’t mind his post-walk rub down, but they are getting tiresome!

Congrats on another year with Brooks!

    2. When Cocoa gets wet, it doesn't penetrate her fur--I just wipe it off. I don't think she'd go for a raincoat, lol

  4. Congrats on being a part of the Brooks Running Collective, Wendy! I'm in the middle of Kara Goucher's "The Longest Race". I'm glad you're with Brooks and not with Nike, my goodness!

Well done on that long run! Your half-marathon training is well under way! For the last few months, I've been doing all my long runs on the road - first for Berlin and now London. I wouldn't mind doing more trail after all this!

Nice job with the snow shoes! Did someone take the photo for you or is it a really good selfie?

    1. Haha--I have a tripod and brought it with me on my snowshoe outing, hoping to get some good photos!

And PS: I haven't been a fan of Nike for a while, based on their treatment of female athletes.

  5. Whoa...be careful what you wish for indeed. That's a lot of snow, slush etc. And then when it freezes...you've got ice. I just got a new pair of Brooks for my walking...probably should have gotten a new pair sooner. I sure tell a difference in the support. Congrats on continuing with Brooks and get up the good work.

  6. Well, you won't catch me wishing for snow, especially in January ;-) No rain here, but lots (did I say lots?) of snow, and the wind has been a bear since Friday. I think we'll get a reprieve from the extreme temps mid-week; still sub-freezing, but not sub-ZERO (#heatwave).

  7. Ha I will never wish for more wintry weather here. We had a little snow but our polar vortex arrived and it is COLD!

    1. I really didn't think this would happen! It was so mild up until now.

  8. Our snow melted quickly with all the rain. Now we're getting freezing temps.

I've never tried snowshoeing... I'm planned to and then we didn't have snow.

I actually have been recovering in Brooks and ran in them today (by accident). I still prefer Topos because of the wide toe box. Congrats though.

  9. Good thinking to move your long run to Wednesday- aren't you glad you didn't have to do 10 miles on the treadmill?
Congrats on the Brooks Running Collective! I'll be interested to hear what that involves as the year goes on.
I've never tried snowshoeing. When I lived up north I tried to be inside as much as possible during the winter- that was probably part of my problem. I would have been happier if I had embraced winter sports more.
Hope you get some clear roads this week!

    1. Ha--well guess what I did on the TM today?

Yes, embracing winter sports definitely helps get through the winter up here! But I grew up playing outside all winter, so it's in my blood, I guess.

  10. Goodness me, well done for fitting all that activity in! We haven't had any proper snow yet this winter but it's really cold (for us) esp at night. I got up to 5 miles run/walking this morning which means I feel I can interact with the running blogs again (I know, I know). Felt good to be back on the canal again, too.

  11. Congrats to your 3rd round with the Brooks team!!
Eew... that weather. West slushy snow is the worst. Well done getting some running done and I hope you get clear roads soon. Nice work in the gym too, as usual, your overhad lifts look savage!

  12. No wishing for snow over here lol - it's been a wild weather week for sure! We got some snow at the start of the week but nothing like what you all got. Great job getting your long run done mid-week.

  13. Love it or hate it, snow really does make everything look beautiful. Stay safe out there!

    Congratulations the Brooks Collective!

And you're doing so great with all your training, both running and strength! I love to see the gains you make!

  14. Congratulations on Brooks Collective!
Way to go on pushing through the weather to get in your workouts. Snowshoe wins cross training. Glad to hear SJ is healing well.

  16. Well done on the long run, it's not easy to maintain that pace on the ice.
Here the snow is rare so I like to see the photos with a "white landscape".
I had a similar experience some years ago. I went to Stockholm for a conference in February and I ran very very slowly on the ice: it was a great experience!!!!
