Running Out of My Comfort Zone

I'm not being dramatic when I tell you it has been fire outside. We are still in June and if this is what summer will be like, take me back to winter. Sure the sun is shining, but it burns if you are out there too long. While I do love summer, I do not like the extreme heat. We've been in the 90s all week--we even broke a few records. We had some storms Saturday night, which brought a lot of rain and cooler temperatures.

Meanwhile, I did get all my runs done outside! I just started a lot earlier than I normally do. A runner's gotta run, am I right? Running teaches us to push outside of our comfort zone and this week reminded me of that!

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: Ice Trail run 7.1 miles, waterskiing
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 6 miles
Thursday: Strength Training
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: rest

We were up at the lake last weekend and I had plans to run the Gibraltar Segment of the Ice Age Trail. It stormed all night and when I woke up Sunday morning, it was still raining. I stalked the weather radar like a good runner and finally by 7:30, I saw that the rain was coming to an end. Once I got to the trailhead, the rain had slowed to a mist and there were patches of fog. It was very quiet and somewhat eerie but as always, very beautiful. The birds were singing but other than that, I had the trail to myself. I finished this very satisfying run and rewarded myself with a ride on my pretty pink waterski!

On Monday, the temperature shot up quickly and by the time I got to CrossFit, it was already in the upper 80s. It was warm in the gym, but the fans were blowing, which made it tolerable. The strength portion of the workout was 12 minutes on the clock of 8-10 rounds of plyometric pushups (I did strict), 10-12 banded face pulls, and 1-2 Turkish getups per side (I used a 10# dumbbell). I did 3 rounds of this before time was called. The MetCon was a 4 x 3:00 with 1:00 rest of 18 cal on the bike and 15 push press (I used a 35# barbell). I finished with consistent splits of 2:30, 2:32, 2:27, and 2:24. This one was all about consistency and staying strong in spite of the heat!

I had to give up my leisurely morning coffee on Wednesday to get my run done before the blast furnace turned on. I was on the trails by about 6:15 and already it was 80 degrees. My run felt hard but I was pleasantly surprised by how strong I felt. It was peaceful in the woods--the cicadas are starting to die off and the birds were pretty quiet too. I did see some deer running in the woods as well. I'm glad I got it done!

On Thursday, I took a pass on the WOD, even though there was running in the MetCon. I didn't want to deal with the heat and wanted to continue to work on my posterior chain. I used the same hypertrophy workout from the past 2 weeks but made some modifications to mix it up. The first set had deadlifts alternating with sumo squats. I used my sketchy barbell with 65# for both movements and did sets of 10, 15, and 20 reps. The second set I did as written: hamstring curls on a ball, alternating with heals up goblet squats using a 25# kettlebell, sets of 10, 15, 20. The last set was lunges holding dumbbells (10# each hand) alternating with banded side steps 10, 15, 20m. Yes, my glutes --especially the left--were on fire. That was the goal!

On Friday, I did my best to get out the door as early as I could. I bravely ran in a running bra--this one has a lot of coverage-- because I couldn't bear the thought of a sweaty singlet. There were quite a few runners on the bike path with the same idea. The humidity started to take a toll on me and I stopped at the drinking fountain on the path for water both ways. I was spooked in the scary tunnel by a group of high school cross-country runners when they ran up behind me--they got a kick out of that! The run back was into a cool easterly breeze, courtesy of Lake Michigan 25 miles away. But it made all the difference!

We rode up to the lake on Saturday. It rained pretty much all day, so we went to Madison for lunch. No waterskiing --this summer isn't playing nicely for that! We had an exciting evening of weather--the trifecta--thunderstorms, tornadoes, and torrential rain. What a strange summer we're having!

How was your week? Are you running outside in the extreme heat? How are you staying cool? What are you doing to push yourself out of your comfort zone?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. Yes this summer is a hot one so far. All the better to appreciate fall when it comes. I'm in no hurry for it. I m grateful I don't have to do marathon sized miles in this!

  2. We hit 100 yesterday! I would rather run in a snow storm! Good for you for keeping up your miles in this I find it very draining. This week looks a little bit better. I am very self conscious of the DD’s when running but good for you!

    1. I am self-conscious of my mid section but I can live with it. It was nice to run in the bra!

  3. Well done, Wendy! Running in the heat is no joke.
You look good in that running bra! All those Crossfit workouts are definitely giving you a very toned body!
I pushed myself out of my comfort zone with a river crossing on a hike last week. I thought I was going to die....but more about that next Tuesday! ;-)

  4. Funny thing- my sister and her husband were visiting this week, and it was actually hotter in Chicago (where they live) than it was here! We were in the upper 80s every day with some nice breezes. So weird.
Those trail runs look amazing! I would happily run on them, regardless of the heat. And, I'me very glad you ran in a sports bra. I learned a few years ago that it makes a huge difference in the heat, not to be wearing a shirt. And I promise you it's not pretty- but I don't care.

    1. I feel you on the not pretty part but I did my best to hide the ugly parts!

  5. Yes we hit some extreme heat for us too this week! It was in the 80s when I went out at 6ish a.m. this morning already! I ran in tank tops all week. I'm not comfortable enough right now to wear just a sports bra either, good for you!

  6. It's great that you were able to get out and water ski last Sunday. Bummer that it didn't work out this weekend. It was super hot here as well, but it's supposed to get a little more tolerable this coming week.

    1. Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about the lack of waterskiing. It's not the first summer it's been like this, but it's been a while!

  7. The heat is on! I agree, it does seem a bit early for these extreme temps and humidity, but at least it isn't snowing (my mantra, LOL). It was hot here today, but the humidity wasn't quite heavy, so it felt nice for my two rides.

  8. So was it really muddy on the trail after all that rain?
We just got the heat here at the end of the week. It’s sending me to my tread with our A/C and fans!

  9. I was team sports bra this week too. I'm always thankful to have sports bras with pockets in them for my phone! It was a great week to be cycling though :)

    1. This sports bra has 3 pockets! I didn't use them but I imagine it would be helpful during a race for gels!

  10. That is some legit heat, wow! Records set. I do miss a good summer thunderstorm though, they don't happen much in London. Love the sports bra!

    2. Good morning,
I miss running, my soul misses running, for years I was a runner until one day on the way to work I was involved in a car accident, since then my body has let me know no more running for me. I now go to the gym a few day's a week, as most runners know it's not the same. I do manage a few walks during any week, it's not the same impact as running though.
At 65 I'm not ready to cash in my chips yet. My lesson is to keep moving as best we can.

  11. Your "out of my comfort zone" made me giggle, as one of our club's coaches told me the other week out of all the people he has ever trained, I am the person who is least willing to go outside my comfort zone. Yup, and proud of it. I reminded him I have never hit the wall or got injured in a marathon and enjoy marathon training: running is far too important to knock myself out over it! He did concede that and I did try a harder session the other week - but my glasses kept bouncing around and I was worried I'd trip over ... Anyway, well done to you in the heat, it's very humid here and I did find it quite hard going out in the morning today!

    1. It is hard to push out of the comfort zone--I do think this is something that running teaches us. It's hard to improve when you don't push beyond your limits. But everyone is on their own journey and I'm glad you are comfortable with yours!

  12. Tunnels are not a thing here, but I imagine that has to be scary to have a group come up behind you. It's so hot, I want to cry. There's just no getting away from it. I am running outside, and I'm leaving my house super early to do so. It's hideous.

    1. I feel you on the heat--it's so unusual for us to have heat like this for such a prolonged stretch. Hang in there!
