No, it's not Christmas. It's late summer/early fall--my favorite time of the year. The days are still warm; the mornings are cool, and the foliage is turning colors. It's also marathon season, and the memories of my final training runs before the Chicago marathon always fill my thoughts on my fall runs. Mother Nature hasn't disappointed this week, even though there was some light rain. There's always so much to enjoy on my fall runs!
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Trail Sisters run 4.2 miles
Monday: Trail run 7 miles
Tuesday: Fluid Running outdoors!
Wednesday: Trail run 5 miles
Thursday: Yoga with Adriene/Strength Training
Friday: run 3.5 miles
Saturday: waterskiing
After our Trail Sisters leadership summit last weekend, Ilisa and I were excited to recruit some more women to run with us on our Sunday run. We also planned for coffee afterwards at a local coffee shop. We had 11 runners, counting us, so call it a success! The run was at a local preserve with limestone trails, which is a favorite for most of us. We ran in several different groups based on pace and distance. Some started a little early to get in some extra miles. What a fun morning!
With Monday being the Labor Day holiday, the gym was closed, so I headed to my favorite local trails for a run. The weather was perfect--this truly is the best time of the year in the Midwest. I only saw one deer as I was driving in, but after I parked, I heard the trumpeting sound of Sandhill Cranes. I followed the sound and found 3 of them, upset with a gaggle of Canada geese, who were honking at them. Call me a nerd, but I found this highly entertaining! Sadly, the standoff was broken up by a man who walked up with a container of dry corn and tossed it in the direction of the cranes. They were not happy. Neither was I. He may have meant well, but it's important not to feed the wildlife! Other than that, my run was uneventful.
It was raining on Wednesday, but the rain was light, so I went to the trails--this time the east preserve- for a shorter run. Yellow was the theme for this run, as the trails were lined with varieties of yellow flowers. They brightened up the gloom! There were no wildlife sightings on this run, save for a few squirrels dropping acorns on my head!
Thursday's strength workout was another pyramid scheme:
We started with 20 minutes on the clock doing 1 pull-up (I did banded) + 2 dumbbell (25#) bench press + 3 GHD situps + 4 walking lunges. We increased each rep by 1 per round, and at 10 minutes, we decreased each rep by one per round. I did 5 total reps before the 10 minute time was called and finished my final 5 reps before the end of the workout.
Friday morning brought a beautiful sunrise and 61F temperatures. Perfect running weather, and this was the best run I've had in a while. My knee is still bothering me, but the knee strap held it tight, and I felt as if I was flying around the neighborhood. Sometimes you get what you want, but also what you need. What a great start to my day.
We drove up to the lake on Saturday. I was hoping to get some waterskiing in, but the lake was choppy. By mid-afternoon, the water calmed enough that I decided to try. I'm glad I did, because it wasn't long after that the wind picked back up again! Not my best ski, but in mid-September, it's better than no ski! Sorry for the blurry photo--my camera is on a tripod on the boat--you get what you get, lol!
Off the road...
On Sunday, we belatedly celebrated all the summer birthdays--my father-in-law, my hubs, and both my boys--by going out to dinner. It's always great to get together, and we had a nice evening! Can you believe my FIL is 94? He's just amazing.
For the past week or 2, I have been experiencing issues with the Blogger platform, which is what I use to post my blog. There was an issue with comments not being published--including my own on my blog. That has been resolved, but as I was preparing this post, I had issues adding photos having to go into the settings to upload them. I have learned that it isn't just me. Even before this happened, I have been considering migrating my blog to another platform. I only blog once per week, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. Stay tuned....
How was your week? Are you enjoying signs of fall? What's your favorite time of year? Is anyone else having blog issues? Any recommendations for blog platforms should I decide to migrate?

Ugh blogger issues are so annoying! I moved my blog to Wordpress 2 years ago because I wanted commenters to be notified when I responded to their comment and there were a few other issues with commenting. It was not too bad overall but there is an annual cost associated with it, I think $60-70? I could not figure out how to automatically route those who used my old blog to the new Wordpress site but I had a post on the old site directing them to the new one.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the cooler, drier temps. I wish we could get some rain, though. It is horribly dry here! Am I remembering correctly that your grandchild is due this month??
Your FIL looks AMAZING!! Wow!!
My grandson is due in October. It went so fast--hard to believe he will be here soon!
DeleteFirst off, your father-in-law looks AMAZING for any age over 80, let alone for 94! Seriously, from the picture I'd guess he's in his late 70s. Happy birthday to all the guys!
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you got such a good turnout for your Trail Sisters' run. How do you recruit new members? Word of mouth, social media? Everyone looks so happy in the post-run coffee picture!
So glad you got to waterski. Here's hoping you get a few more unexpected days of skiing before winterizing the boat.
Have a great week, Wendy!
We rely on social media and word of mouth to recruit new Trail Sisters! We have a lot of members, but like anything, very few show up for a run.
DeleteI love that running photo of you from Friday morning!!! Glad you're enjoying some nicer weather. Our weather is pretty horrendous, but I'm still excited for "fall." In October we might get some cooler weather, and in the meantime I'll enjoy everyone's beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteWait, is that your 94-year-old FIL in the photo?! He really does look incredible. And... grandchild! This month! Is that correct? I'm so excited for you.
Grandchild is coming next month! And yes that is my FIL. He's amazing.
DeleteYay for getting out on the water! We’re still getting temps in the 90s, so my favorite weather is a few weeks off at least. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow fun to recruit new trail runners. I hope they continue to join you.
Today is cool, in the 70s. I'm not complaining, but I wouldn't mind being able to waterski one more time.
DeleteYour father in law does look amazing! Good for him! I was wondering why you had not posted in a few weeks! Questioning the is it worth it? I went through that with IG a few months ago. I was spending so much time photo taking and posting I just decided it wasn’t how I wanted to spend time. I do still like having an online journal with the blog but also post much less than I used to.
ReplyDeleteI'm not ready to quit on IG yet--I love sharing my nature photos. And I like using my blog as a journal too. I'm only blogging once a week, so it's not too burdensome yet.
DeleteWow how much fun to celebrate everyone's birthday! Your father-in-law looks amazing. I use wordpress, it's pretty simple to use, but I've never migrated from another platform. How frustrating to have continuous issues! Good luck
ReplyDeleteI just think Google (who owns blogger) is focusing its energies in other areas. I continue to explore my options.
DeleteCool autumn mornings for the win!
ReplyDeleteWell done with growing your Trail Sisters group! A coffee afterwards sounds perfect.
The Sandhill Crane vs. Canada Goose standoff must have been hilarious to watch! Although I’d have been annoyed at the guy feeding them too.
Blog: another vote for WordPress. With so many years of posts, I’d just make sure you have a proper backup and that the photos can be preserved. Definitely worth doing it carefully rather than rushing it! I love a blog because it's such a useful archive, too!
Here’s to many more fall adventures, Wendy!
Thank you for the advice! I did backup my blog last week and will continue to do so until I make a decision about its future.
DeleteThat's so frustrating about blog platform issues. I had problems a few weeks ago to comment on any blog on Blogger. Then two days or so later it was working again. But I'd say, anything that isn't Google would be worth it. I guess wordpress is the other viable option. I think you should do it. Google has spent so little energy updating Blogger the last 10+ years that I'm surprised they're still running it at all.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this time of the year is so fantastic. The mix of still quite warm weather with cooler mornings and nature changing colours is lovely for anything outdoorsy. I hope you'll get some good fall weather for as long as possible, since your summer hasn't been great.
Your father-in-law looks fantastic for 94!
I appreciate your input! As I approach retirement, I plan to do more writing, so I need to give the migration serious consideration.
DeleteAs you know, I was having problems with commenting last week, which was resolved (somehow?) the next day. I also had issues uploading pics on Wednesday, which had me in a First-World-Probs panic as I was headed out of town Friday after work and needed to get as much done before hitting the road. Thankfully, that problem also resolved itself by Thursday evening. Ugh. It’s annoying! Nice family pic! It’s nice getting everyone together ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love when my family is together! Nothing better!
DeleteIt's so annoying when certain platforms just go off the rails.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that, besides your knee, you had a wonderful week full of great things. I love that you are exploring more trails, and getting in your lake time, and that fall is finally there for you. It will come as no surprise that it is still in the 80s and 90s here with no break in sight.
Love that you had some family time! That's so special!
Thank you Jenn! I am really trying to lean into the good right now.
DeleteI've always used wordpress... never an issue.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome to ski in September.
Loving this time of year as far as temps and soon the fall foliage. But those early sunsets and dark mornings - boo!
Skiing in September seems to be more of the norm than the exception now!
DeleteI always love the cranes! Picking up yours and a couple of others' blog posts from home as I can never get logged in to Google to comment on my laptop and often use that at the community centre these days. Anyway, lovely to see your family get-together, too!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you stopped by to check them out! I hope you're doing well.
