A Change in Perspective

In the midst of the never ending winter and my ongoing health issues came an invite from my southern sister from another mister. Holly, who used to co-host the Weekly Wrap link up with me, convinced me to book a flight for a weekend visit to her new lake house. She found a trail race for us. I looked for flights and found a great deal.

After I booked my flight, I had second thoughts. What if I don't start to feel better? Will I be able to run? Even more important, will I be able to water ski? Will she still want to hang with me?

What the heck was I worried about?

As the week started off, I wasn't feeling well at all and even worse, my anxiety returned. I've shared here on the blog that the main reason I started running 25 years ago was because I had debilitating anxiety. Running has kept me calm and centered. I haven't been running much lately due to this ongoing flare of RA symptoms. In addition, my doctor changed some of my medications, one of which was causing me insomnia and anxiety. Thankfully, as the week went on, I started to feel like myself again.

I did a LOT of yoga this week. Thank goodness for Yoga with Adriene.

There was running. On Monday, the sun came out and I ran 6 miles on the bike path. I took it slow, but by 4 miles, I started to struggle. It's a really yucky feeling--you know how you feel when you go
all out to get to the finish line? I'm feeling that even running a slow jog.

Wednesday was still sunny and it was warmer. I slept pretty good the night before and actually felt good when I got up. For the first time in a long time, I was excited to lace up my running shoes. My legs felt light and after a couple of minutes, I looked down at my watch. When I saw that I was running 8:43m/m, I put on the brakes. Yikes. By the time I finished 3 miles, I was struggling again.finally called it quits a few minutes later.

For my weekly strength session with Sammy Jo, I worked on power cleans. It's kind of like a dance move and we all know I can't dance! Still, they are getting better. She also had me work on pistol squats, farmer carries, banded side steps, and pushing the prowler. My posterior chain let me know how tough this was! Bootcamp consisted of 3 AMRAPS. We did KB swings, goblet squats, pushups, slamball cleans, pullups and push presses. In between sets there was running and rowing.

Friday morning, I headed south to visit Holly! As soon as she picked me up from the airport, I knew everything was going to be fine. On the drive to her house, we caught up on life. Her new lake house is amazing and as I write this, I am sitting on her deck high up above the water, looking through the trees. The birds are singing and it is peaceful.

This was a much needed change in perspective for me.

We packed a lot in these couple of days together! Yes, there was waterskiing. We also ran a trail race, which I’ll recap on Tuesday. We kayaked the Softkahatchee Creek. There was plenty of time for wine and laughs. Holly and her husband are wonderful hosts and I’m so grateful for this weekend getaway!

Holly, Barb, me

How was your week? I'm going to apologize for any weird formatting you might see--blogging on my iPad was a challenge! I'm heading home later today and it's back to life as I know it! Feeling good and looking forward to getting back on track. Have a great week!

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  2. Yay you saw Holly! Sorry about the anxiety. I've noticed I've felt less wound up this taper, presumably because I'm managing to keep more active this time. Well done you for facing your fears - and indeed hooray for Adriene. I love that my blogging running friends and my real-life running friends here both do Adriene - a lovely link!
