The Heat is On!

While I wasn't loving the cool summer we were having, it did make for some really nice runs. I'm glad I had those because now it is hot and whew, have my runs been suffering. So much for the return to the kind of running I'm used to. It's become all about putting miles in the bank, maintaining fitness until the return of cooler weather.

I'm not going to complain about the heat, though. Besides my runs, I'm loving that it is finally summer! I guess you can't have it all. Even though the running wasn't the best, there was a lot of good happening this week. Let's get to it.

The Week in Review:
Sunday: drive home from Door County
Monday: Run 4 miles and Yoga with Adriene
Tuesday: rest
Wednesday: 5.5 miles and Yoga with Adriene
Thursday: strength training, boot camp, and Weekly Challenge: 800m weighted sled pull and 50 kip ring swings
Friday: rest
Saturday: 2 mile run, finish Weekly Challenge: 800m weighted sled pull and 50 kip ring swings, 1.3 mile run
Total mileage: 10.8 miles (whomp, whomp..)
Monthly total for June: 73!

Running was not on my list of favorite things this week but I did manage to get those 3 runs in. For this runner who loves to run fast, all I can say is ugh! Just when I find my running mojo again, summer decides to show up and cramp my style. On Wednesday and Saturday, I started out slow and I felt pretty good, but by the end of my runs, I was in the red zone, gasping for air, and cut both of them short. Clearly, I need to run even slower in this heat. Message received.

Finding shade to run in is definitely a win!
But wait! Did someone say Weekly Challenge? My CrossFit box is having a summer challenge. Every week is a new "fun" activity. You know I love a challenge and I sure didn't want to have FOMO with this one! Because I was out of town the first week, I had to make up week one and complete week 2 this week. I love swinging on the rings, so that was a win. The sled pull was hard but I didn't mind it. Since the box is in an industrial park, I was pulling the sled while workmen were heading into the shops. Typical men, I got a few comments. One guy told me his van needed a tow. 🙄 Hahaha.

Since I missed strength training last week, Sammy Jo more than made up for it, having me do an EMOM of back squats alternating with deadlifts. You know I love me some deadlifts. She piled on the weight but I was up for the challenge. After that, I worked on handstand pushups alternating with those kip swings I needed to do for the challenge. Bootcamp was ridiculous and awesome all at the same time. It was hot and we were dying.

I saw my rheumatologist this week--actually, I didn't see her. I saw her physician's assistant. I really like her PA, but I wanted to see my doctor. Has that ever happened to you? I guess not having to see the doctor could be considered a good thing--it means I'm doing well. The PA did agree with me that receiving the shingles vaccine and having a bad reaction to it probably made me flare. I'm glad that's over with and for now, I don't plan on getting the 2d dose. I'm not anti-vax, just a person with an autoimmune disease who doesn't want to go back down the road. You get me, right?

Anyhoo, on the way home, I stopped at the grocery store and the Weinermobile was parked there! Of course, I got a picture. I don't eat hot dogs but come on, it's the Weinermobile. Apparently, a lot of people love the iconic vehicle--there were all these women were posing in front of it! I kept hearing: "I need to get a picture for my son." I may have said the same thing. The Hotdoggers (the drivers) were college graduates from the University of Wisconsin (Oscar Mayer is based in Madison). I mentioned it to my Badger, who reminded me that he's vegan. But wouldn't driving the Weinermobile be such a fun job? I would relish the chance to drive it...

It might be hot but the running doesn't stop! It just slows down /via @oldrunningmom #runchat #running

How was your week? Is the heat affecting your runs? How can I slow down more? Have you ever seen the Weinermobile? Can you sing the Oscar Mayer Weiner jingle?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I am with you, maintaining fitness until the return of cooler weather is also my only plan at the moment.
You are wise to run slower under such heat, only in this way you can be fast and in perfect shape when the weather will improve.
However I see you work hard on lifting weight too!
About your questions: heat is affecting a lot my runs; to slow down more, but not too much, I suggest to run in early morning; never seen the Weinermobile but ... I live in Italy.

    1. I think not having the Weinermobile isn't a bad thing...as fun as it is, it symbolizes processed meats!

  2. Right there with you I am just going to keep getting out there and doing what I can until the weather cools off. My ideal summer day would have it cloudy and over cast in the morning and then sunny in the afternoon. My son used to love that Oscar Meyer truck when he was little. Fun to see it is still around!

    1. I love when the mornings are cool and then it heats up by midday. That is just perfect, I think!

  3. Summer has settled in here too. I'm not even trying to run too fast right now because I just want to enjoy it. I'll still take the heat over cold any day though.
HOpe you are enjoying your weekend.

    1. I'm trying to enjoy running slower, lol! But it's the only way a run is happening these days!

  4. I have never seen the weinermobile in person, but yes, I could sing the jingle.

And yup, we came up with the same title. I have to somehow make sure I don't kill myself in Thursday's race (or be hit by lightning, whichever happens).

Don't forget, though, that the summer running can lead to better running in the Fall!

    1. Those nice fall runs are definitely the reward for putting up with the summer heat!

  5. My desire to run in the summer heat is at about 5% but I've gotta do this pesky marathon training for Chicago so I just suck it up and smile...and sweat and curse along the way :)

I haven't seen the Weinermobile in years! So cool that you were able to get a photo with it. I also don't eat hot dogs that open, but I would have been excited to see it, lol.

    1. I've seen the peanut mobile too. I wonder if they call the drivers nutters? LOL

  6. I just had my annual physical a month ago, and we chatted about the shingles vaccine. With all of my skin sensitivity issues, I'm a pretty strong candidate. Every place here has a wait list, though. Gotta love small town reality LOL The Weinermobile seems to pop up at the strangest places...the last time I saw it was at the Quad Cities Marathon in 2016.

    1. There are wait lists here too for the Shingles vaccine, but keep in mind that I've got connections--lol. Its a good vaccine--just maybe not for me!

  7. Heh heh, I see what you did there..."relish" the chance to drive the Weinermobile.

  8. I remember making my mom chase after that wienermobile as a kid. They gave out wiener whistles. I did see it last week outside Mariano's. No more hot dogs for me either but the mobile sure is fun!

  9. You can't pass up the Weinermobile! And I don't even like hotdogs. Lol! The heat is definitely on here in NH too. I'm loving it but it's making things feeling rather soupy. Not complaining though!

  10. The heat is also killing me!! I'm going to have to suck it up and get up at 4:30 or 5 and get after it if I'm going to survive - LOL!!! Love your CrossFit challenge - so fun to mix it up! And the Weinermobile? I'm dying. Of course you have to take a pic...and the pun about "relishing" the chance to drive it was not lost on me. Here's to finding some shade, a breeze and running mojo this week!!

  12. Funny that you saw the Weinermobile! I am sorry you had a bad reaction to the Shingles vaccine. That does not sound fun at all. Love that your box is doing fun summer challenges!

  13. Great job getting all those work outs in spite of the heat. And I love that photo of you on the rings, so cool :)

  14. I agree with you on the heat - it's nice to have summer weather, but it makes running so hard! Although really, the soupy humidity and lack of breeze is what makes it extra hard. Where that's wind from all of winter and summer? Great job on your workouts this week - your sled pull looks hard!

    1. The sled pull was easy compared to my runs! How odd is that?

  17. Wendy, forgive me but I can't remember your post talking about a reaction to the shingles vaccine - could you link it for me? I had the vaccine last Monday and holy hell was I sick. Wondering if you had the same symptoms as I did...and I'm also thinking about not getting the second shot, too.

  18. I saw a story on TV not long ago about the college kids driving the Weinermobile for the summer! I think that would be so much fun.

You know how much I loathe summer running - it's just grin and bear it until fall!

  19. The heat hasn't affected my runs...yet. I absolutely can sing the Oscar Mayer jingle!

  20. Oh, the Weinermobile..what a Wisconsin icon. Love that you left with a whistle!

Bummer about the shingles vaccine, but your decision definitely makes sense.

  21. It's so hard to suddenly go into hot running, a real shock to the system, so well done! I'm with you on the doctor, though - you want to see the actual doctor!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm a nurse practitioner, and I'm sensitive to that. But the difference is that their appointments are scheduled with me, not the doctor with me coming in as a substitute. If I'm seeing the PA instead of the doctor, I want to be told that.

      Delete
    2. Yes! Nurse practitioners are way better than doctors at some things (I wouldn't want any of my doctors doing my smear or blood work for example, or talking me through diet issues etc) but if you're told you're seeing someone, you're seeing that person!

  22. This heat is just ugh!!! It is definitely talking a toll on me too. I once saw the Weinermobile when I did Ragnar a few years ago. I think we we still in Wisconsin?
