Looking for Color

It's finally real fall here--the kind of fall we are accustomed to. Not that our recent conditions were fake fall, but all that color, bright sunshine, and warm temperatures aren't what we Midwesterners expect for November. Heck, there are still leaves on some of the trees! I loved our unusually long stretch of gorgeous weather, which mades the arrival of 'normal' a little jarring. I made the most of it this week by wearing brightly colored gear or as I like to say, bringing my own sunshine.

This week also brought me to my knees, literally, with a full-blown RA flare. A few weeks ago, I received the Covid vaccine and had a very strong response to it, lasting for a couple of days. The body aches subsided, but my joints continued to ache. This week, I struggled with my runs, feeling fatigued and needing to stop frequently to walk. I finally gave in and called my rheumatologist for steroids. It's been a while since I've needed those, but I am feeling better. Friday's run wasn't quite so painful and I could breathe, which let me fly freely.

Here's to hoping for better days ahead!

Weekly Rundown
Sunday: Ice Age Trail run 7 miles/1100 fr
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 5 miles
Thursday: unscheduled rest day
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: yoga/work

On Sunday, we were still up at the lake and I decided to run at the Gibraltar Segment of the Ice Age Trail. Rain was in the forecast, but it looked like there was a window between rain events, so I laced up early and drove to the trailhead. I was the only person on the rock, which was really nice! The sky was hazy and overcast. I was surprised to see so much color on the trail. I also saw a lot of fun mushrooms, several species I hadn't seen before. I used the Seek app to identify and add them to my database. I'm full-on nerd now, lol.

Overall, the trail was quiet this morning, except for a few squirrels. No wind and some fog added to the ambiance. I'm so grateful for these trails.

After a deload week, on Monday, it was back to heavy lifting at CrossFit! For the strength portion, we had to do 5 sets of 3 RM. The last time I did back squats, I hit 130# for my final 3RM, so that is what I did for my 5 sets. They got heavy in a hurry. I didn't need a spotter this time, which was great for my confidence, but when we do them again and I challenge myself, I will not hesitate to ask. The MetCon was 100 slam balls for time. I broke mine up into sets of 25 using a 20# ball and finished in 4:47 minutes.

On Wednesday, it was back to my local preserve for some single track. I decided not to look for the bucks in the east portion this week, but I hoped to find some deer on the west side. As soon as I parked my car, I saw 2 little guys frolicking in the field adjacent to the woods. But when they saw me, they ran into the woods and that was that! My knees were bothering me--thanks, RA-- so I took this one slow. There wasn't a lot of color, with the exception of my shirt, but it was peaceful, which was exactly what I needed!

I spent an unscheduled rest day on the couch on Thursday, waiting for this RA flare to calm down. I woke up Friday morning still achy but not nearly as bad. I headed out into the dark towards the bike path wearing my Noxgear vest and a bright yellow top. It was cloudy and I had to bring my own sunshine. I was amazed at how easy my breathing felt compared to early in the week. My legs felt light and I flew down the path. I always joke that steroids give me wings; that is exactly what happened on Friday.

Something different...

Have you tried the Chat GPT app? It's free and can be used to help with writing or to create images, with uneven results. This past week, one of my Brooks teammates posted a muppet version of herself, running a marathon. She invited all of us to try and the results were entertaining!

Here's mine:

How was your week? Is anyone else stuck in the gray of fall? How do you perk yourself up in the dark days of winter? Have you tried Chat GPT?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. So sorry about the RA flare up! I can't even imagine how irritating it must be, especially if you want to work out. I had to take cortisone a while back for an ear infection, and I was surprised how good it made me feel (I ran my marathon while on them). I'm sure it must be similar (or even more so) with steroids.
I use ChatGPT a lot for responding to e-mails. I draft one and then hand it over to ChatGTP to "make it sound better" and the results are outstanding.
I love Mrs Kermit!! I need to try it!

    1. I never thought about using Chat GPT for emails! That might come in handy at work!

  2. Ugh, sorry about the flare! So was the Covid vaccine somehow connected to the flare? Or is it hard to say. Anyway yes, now you know why steroids are banned for athletes, ha ha. Sounds like you had a pretty great week of fitness in spite of everything.
I'm embarrassed to say I haven't tried ChatGPT. My kids of course both use it ALL THE TIME. Maybe I need to get with it.

    1. The Covid vaccine really fired up my immune system and that is like poking the bear when it comes to RA. It happened with the shingles vaccine too. I love being on steroids, lol. I feel young again!

  3. Glad to hear that the steroids made you feel better.

Leaves are mostly down here and it feels like winter.

Never heard of ChatGPT... You have me intrigued...

  4. I hope your RA flare is fizzling out. Do you have to worry about hunting season on the preserves and the Ice Age Trail? We have a lot of deer here, too. I don't worry on the trails near my home in suburbia, but on the Lone Star Trail, I always wear bright colors during deer season. I love seeing the impressive bucks this time of year!

    1. No hunting season here in the suburbs, but yes, in Wisconsin, it's a worry! I bought that bright orange top to wear on the trails up there. I also have a bright orange hat I wear.

  5. Oof sorry to hear about your flare up. Hope that subsides soon and you are feeling back to normal. Yes i have used the ChatGPT app to help with advising and writing the last few months. It can be super helpful!

    1. I definitely need to use it more. I use Grammarly for my blog, which uses AI to correct my grammar. I don't always like the results because it doesn't sound like me!

  6. Sorry about the vaccine reaction and the RA flare. Glad the steroids helped. We have fall colors around here but because of the drought it’s more yellows and browns than bright orange and red.

  7. We still have quite a bit of color, but I don’t think it will be here much longer.Yes, this past week of “real fall” was a brutal reminder of our Midwest’s weather reality. I’m really thankful for the extended late summer feels Momma N granted us. Ugh on the RA flare; glad you’re feeling better.

    1. We were just talking about the amazing fall we've had. I will be sad when it finally comes to an end.

  8. How frustrating to have your RA flare. Do you think your Covid vaccine woke the sleeping giant in any way or was it purely coincidental? I have not used ChatGPT, but should try it sometime.

    1. Pretty sure it was the covid vaccine turning on the immune system! It happened with the shingles vaccine too.

  9. I'm glad you had your Covid jab and at least reacting to it means it's worked, I'd imagine. I had mine on Tuesday and had a sore shoulder and, as usual, my lymph nodes swelled up, esp on the side of the injection (this time the other side than normal!) but apart from that was OK. We're having End of Autumn here and have just gone into a cold snap so I imagine the last leaves will be gone soon. Glad you're feeling better now with the steroids.

  10. AI has so many cool applications and uses. It isn't writing code for me yet, but it's a great help when I need to solve problems. I've used Gemini (Google) and the Snapchat AI, but not ChatGPT. Sorry about the RA flare up, but yay on the steroids helping you!

    1. Some of the physicians at work are using AI to write their notes! I don't know if I want to do that, but it is intriguing!

  11. Florida never really gets that gray. It's always green, which is hard and disconcerting in its own special way. I'm so sorry about your flare up. It must be so frustrating to be cruising along and then hit that kind of roadblock. I really try not to use ChatGPT. While I think it can be useful for some things, I think it can take away from writers and artists. My husband uses it a ton and it drives me nuts.

    1. I've been resistant to use Chat GPT in my writing--I want to sound like me when I write and I find the AI results sanitizing.

  12. I love your colourful clothing! And I'm glad you're feeling better.
I'm definitely not a fan of generative AI for writing or for anything image-related at least if it's used to replace real people. But I use ChatGPT a lot for getting help with code, marketing ideas and similar, since I wouldn't pay anyone for those things at this point anyway (and I assume it's the same for you with pictures). Adobe has gone bezerk lately with all sorts of AI features in their software and most are quite s***, but some are very useful, like the denoise feature in Lightroom which is a miracle for some high ISO photos. So AI can definitely be useful when used with the right purpose.
Nice work with those squats! And look at those shoulder muscles!

  13. UGh sorry about your RA flare up - that sounds awful. And your vaccine side effects! I somehow managed to not have any side effects this time around with my vaccines - I think it was the first time ever! I was maybe a little bit more tired but nothing I couldn't manage. In the past I've gotten feverish, achy and even once had my lymph nodes swell up! I don't mind AI so far - I feel like as long as I learn how to use it that it can only help. But I need to learn!

    1. I always have had a reaction to the Covid vaccine--this was #7--but nothing like this time. Hopefully that means I won't get Covid, lol
