Me versus Me

This was a tough week for me, mentally. We started the week with a couple of rainy days and I was nervous about the election. The results didn't surprise me, but the overwhelming victory did. I have so many thoughts about this, which I won't share here--I don't want to get into politics--but I will share that I am worried about the future. It's going to be a bumpy couple of years.

I am grateful to have running and my other fitness activities to lean into when I'm feeling stressed. This week I really had to push myself to get out the door, but once I got moving, I did feel better. Throughout my life, it's always been me vs me. Now is a good time to remind myself that even though there will always be things outside of my control, I am always in control of how I feel and how I manage my feelings.

Weekly Rundown;
Sunday: trail run 8 miles
Monday: CrossFit with running
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 3 miles
Thursday: CrossFit
Friday: run 6 miles
Saturday: rest/drive up to the lake

We were home last weekend. Since no Trail Sisters run was scheduled for Sunday, I ran a solo run at my preserve. 'Tis the season for the rut, aka mating season for the deer and I was hoping to see some bucks. I was rewarded with 2 big bucks, huge antlers, in the first mile of my run. They were on the move and I couldn't get any good photos, except for the headshot below. It was cloudy and cool, and I made it my mission to look for colors. It's the brown season--even the deer have changed colors to match the trees. This was a really nice run. I was happy that even though I didn't feel well, having received my Covid vaccine the day before, I was able to push through that for a good run.

Still feeling off from the Covid vaccine--can you even believe it?--I decided to go to CrossFit. It's a deload week from all the heavy lifting we've been doing, much like what we do as runners when we take cutback weeks while training for a big race. The WOD was a MetCon: 2-4-6-8-10-12-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 dumbbell burpee clusters. I used 10# dumbbells because there was nothing left, which probably was a good thing. In between each movement were 12 abmat situps and a 100m run. Coach set the timer for 35 minutes and shocker! I finished at 34:xx. I don't know my exact finish time because I didn't realize we didn't have to do the 12 situps and 100m run to cash out.

Doing the MATH for this workout: 144 abmat situps, 1600m running, 98 burpees/clusters. Covid vaccine be damned.

On Wednesday, I woke up to the election results and felt like staying in bed. The weather didn't help either--it was damp and gloomy. I laced up and drove to the preserve for some nature therapy. I saw a lot of deer, including a buck and a doe that were getting acquainted in the woods. There was also a young buck, which made me wonder if he was trying to compete with the big guy for the doe. The big guy did not look happy to see me, and since I don't have antlers to tangle with, after snapping a few photos, I dashed back to the trail. I just couldn't shake off my malaise, so I called it quits at 3 miles.

I was still feeling pretty glum when I woke up Thursday, but I dragged my sad self to the gym, hoping to lift my mood. The WOD had bench presses for the strength portion; specifically 4 sets of 3 at 70-80% 3RM. My 3 RM earlier this fall was 75#; both my partner and I think we miscalculated the weight on the bar that day. We settled on 65# for our lifts and worked on form. The MetCon was a banger: 6 rounds for time, using a plate, of 12 ground-to-overhead, 10 overhead down-ups, 8 lateral burpees over the plate, and 6 plate walks. After each round was active rest on the bike for the time it took to finish the round. I used a 15# plate for everything but for the down-ups, I used a 10# plate. After the first round, I found myself recovering sooner than the time allotted for rest, so I cut my rest short, which was allowed. I also got faster with each round as I grew more comfortable with those down-ups. I finished in 20:36 and felt much better mentally after conquering this tough workout.

Oooh I was sore on Friday after that WOD! When I started my run on Friday, I felt pretty good, but after the first mile, my legs started to protest. It didn't help matters that one of my fellow trail runners stopped me to say hi and commented that I was favoring my left leg. Yes, my knee was hurting but was it obvious? I kept going, but when I hit 2 miles, I stopped to regroup. Yes, I considered turning around and heading home. But instead, I stretched out my legs and forged on, at a slower pace. My legs loosened up and I finished this 6 miler in under an hour with a smile on my face!

Off the road...

We drove to Madison for lunch at The Great Dane, which is right off the capitol square. They are celebrating their 30th anniversary. We have been going there since they opened! It's amazing to me that they have maintained the high quality standards for food and beer since day one. Our lunch did not disappoint and the beers were incredible. I admit to feeling a little wistful-missing my boys, who we have taken there many times over the years.

How was your week? Have you gotten the Covid shot this year and if so, did you react? I felt bad for a couple of days and since then, my RA is flaring. What was your toughest workout of the week? What do you do when you're feeling bad on a run?

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I have the same feelings about the election results. My last COVID-19 vaccine was the previous year. Do I need another one?

    1. Yes! You need one every year. Much like the flu shot, the covid shot will change every year to match the version of Covid that is currently making people ill.

  2. It sounds like I have the same feeling about the election. Overall it definitely impacted my week too! My covid shot is scheduled for Thursday -- I usually have side effects so I'm assuming ill feel a little ill on Friday.

    1. I was surprised at how much this vaccine affected me. I hope it goes well for you!

  3. I have my Covid jab on Tuesday. I've had to go private as I don't fall into the slightly confusing categories they announced for NHS ones (was over 75 or with a severe vulnerability, then suddenly over-65s and Matthew with his type 2 diabetes were called) but because Matthew had free ones we could justify paying for my flu (I've paid for a few years) and Covid (only available from this year so I didn't get one at all last year). I had the flu one on Wednesday and just had a sore arm, still have a big red circle so I'm going to get my Covid in the other arm. I haven't reacted badly yet but my glands all always come up for a few days. So I'm planning to run tomorrow and then Thurs and/or Fri depending on how I am.

    1. It's amazing how difficult it is for you to get a vaccine that is so readily available here! I'm glad you were able to schedule for it.

  4. Well done on Thursday's MetCon! That sounds like a tough one - anything with burpees sandwiched in between there is tough!
When I don't feel good mentally on a run, I try to push through if possible until I start feeling better. I saw your Wednesday run on Strava and knew what was going through your mind. Aren't we all grateful for running therapy?

    1. Oh my goodness YES! Running as therapy was the original reason I started running so many years ago. It never lets me down!

  5. Yep, it was a sad week. I'm so glad we have running to help us cope! Nice job on finishing that run on Friday, and nice job pushing through everything while feeling the results of the Covid vax. When I'm not feeling good on a run, I remind myself that it's only temporary. 9 times out of 10 if you just keep going, you'll start to feel better.
    Those beers look GOOD!

    1. The beer was incredible! But it always is there. It's still our favorite place!

  6. Have you ever had a buck act aggressively when you stop? My friend and I stopped once to take a picture, and the buck put down his head and started tapping his front hooves on the ground. We didn’t stay to see what he might do!

    1. I've had bucks stomp and sometimes snort at me, but more as a warning, nothing aggressive.

  7. Interesting that someone noticed you were favoring your left leg. I can't wait to see my race pictures. I know my posture can get pretty bad and my arm swing is over exaggerated. I tried to look my best so we will see how it turned out! My flu shot went very well this year. In some years I've had sore arm for quite a while. Still haven't got my COVID shot yet though.

    1. I didn't have a problem with the flu shot at all. So my reaction the the Covid shot really threw me off!

  8. Yep. Fitness serves us well, in every aspect of our lives. I have never gotten close to any bucks, but I’ve seen several does on the trail.

  9. I got my Covid and flu shot.. zero reactions but I have never gotten a reaction. Knock on wood.

I was in NYC for election day and day after. My hubby was so depressed that he took the day off from work. I prefer to stay busy.

    Hope your leg was nothing.

I always favor my right (due to the hardware in my ankle.

My friends have commented recently that I am straight up.. I think when I strained my right ankle and had to favor my left, it made me even?!

    1. My left knee acts up on occasion--it's a result of a fall on the trail a few years ago. Nothing serious, except it's seriously annoying.

  10. Looks like you really have had some fantastic running weather and fab photos. I did get a reaction to my latest covid shot w a slight fever but like you said, feels good to keep moving and try to stick to workouts. So many deer around us right now it’s crazy

  11. I got the Novavax covid vaccine specifically to avoid side effects, and it worked. I felt 20% of what I normally feel after a covid vaccine. I am now not reluctant to be vaccinated. Novavax; I got mine at Costco.

  12. It was a sad and difficult week for sure. And of course, the weather seemed to know what was going on. Sigh. It's been hard to get back to myself, but hopefully, we can all rally!

  13. I was more surprised than many? Maybe I'm disconnected over here and my bubble is a liberal one. I cannot name one person I know here or at home (and I have met a fair number of Americans here) who voted for him. I have had a cloud over my world and its difficult to shake.

    1. I am also surrounded by like-minded people and that has been a blessing--freedom to talk about my feelings and disappointment. I too am struggling to make sense of this and have had a hard time shaking it off.
