Runfessions Boo!

Trick or treat! Smell my feet! Give me something good to eat...or let me runfess! It's the last Friday of October, Halloween is just around the corner, and Marcia has opened the runfessional. Maybe instead of penance, she'll hand out Reese's Peanut Butter pumpkins!

What's your favorite Halloween candy? What do you have to runfess?

Recently, I was talking with my sweet Ukrainian neighbor who told me she signed herself and her daughter up for 'that Hot Chocolate 2 mile marathon'. She proceeded to tell me that she was worried about being able to run the whole thing. I runfess... that I didn't correct her; instead, I encouraged her to participate.

I poolfess... to being a little unnerved and annoyed by a fellow early morning dive well dweller. I'm tethered to the ladder, taking up maybe a 5 foot circumference in the corner of the dive well. Usually, there are 2 lap swimmers on the other side of the pool, leaving much space for Mr. Drifter. Yet, he moseys across the pool towards me, turning around when he is within 2 feet of me.

I runfess... as excited as I was to see Emily Sisson take second in the Chicago Marathon,  finish as the first overall American woman, AND break the women's American marathon record, I was really excited to see that she's a heel striker. Elites, they're just like us, am I right?

Earlier this month, I runfessed that I'd DNS'd a trail half marathon, citing life conflicts. I didn't want to miss my son's rugby game in Madison. I had several other reasons as well. I runfess... that one of the other reasons holding me back was-- TMI alert-- epic chafing on my backside from a run the week before. That experience will hold me back for a while. I sure wasn't looking forward to a possible repeat of that experience.

Ok guys, regarding that race, I also runfess... the truth is that my heart just wasn't in it. I'm going to put it out there and say that I have no interest in running a half marathon anymore. Sure, this race was on a trail, but this trail is limestone and it's flat. Not the kind of trail I'm loving right now. If I needed more proof of this, my trip to California, and our trail adventures showed me what I want to do going forward. One of the best things about running is that there is something for every runner. I'm loving trail running and I could have run forever on those trails. And yes, this is another chance for me to share a photo from my amazing trip!

What do you have to runfess? Have you ever DNS'd a trail race just because you 'weren't feeling it'? Or for some other odd, random reason? How do you respond to those 5k marathoners? Have you ever experienced painful chafing? What's your favorite Halloween candy?

I'm linking up with Marcia for Runfessions and with the ladies of Fit Five Friday: DarleneMichelle, Jenn, and Zenaida.

  1. I did DNS a trail race... it was a flat dirt one and I didn't feel like it.

You trail pictures are amazing. I admit I loved running on the trails in Palm Desert too.

Here I am nervous about the roots and ruts. And falling!!

    Kit Kats!!!

    1. I worry about tripping and falling on the trails too, but not enough to keep me from running on them!

  2. I feel you on the half marathons. It's no secret that I don't feel like racing at all anymore. SO many people in FL asked me when my next race was and it's likely never. Sorry not sorry. I love to run, but I just don't care about races for myself. Yikes on that epic chafe! I've got PB pumpkins here to give out but I haven't opened them for myself.

  3. I'm with you on not feeling the half marathon distance - not sure if or when I'll run another. I think it's great that you so enjoy trail running! I'm convinced I wouldn't be able to stay upright on them lol. Ouch on that epic chaffing!

  4. The only time I have DNS was bc of an injury and once for a family conflict. No big deal, there are always other races to run. I think it's great that you love the trails so much and if trails make you happy, spend more time there. #itsYourRun right? #RunHappy friend. About that chafing, ouch. I had some serious chafing from a bra strap that I have worn so many times. I forgot it was there and my massage therapist was perplexed about what it was.

  5. I agree, the Reese's pumpkins are ALL THAT (and more). I don't care for milk chocolate or peanut butter on their own...but put them together in a Reese's wrapper and I'm in love.

  6. Hahahahaha.... yes, that shower hurts when you've chafed.
Funny you bring up this subject. I'm also not excited about running a road half marathon at this point. I told Darlene I'd run the one with her when she's here in February, but I haven't signed up yet. There are some trail races that I'm more interested in. I could do both, but the real truth is I'm running SO SLOW these days. I feel like running a road half marathon would just kind of rub it in my face- not sure how I'd feel about running a slow half marathon and then comparing it to my much faster time just a couple years ago.... we'll see. I think I'm definitely leaning towards trail races now.

  7. I always get a kick out of people that say they know someone that has done alot of 5k marathons...lol. I haven't ran a marathon since 2020 and not saying I'm never going to but for now I think I'm sticking with the 5k marathons. So much less work than the full marathons....haha!

  8. This reminds of a relay race we did as a group of four. It was for the marathon distance and one of the legs was only 4k. To this day, the friend that ran the 4k always talks about it as "when I did a marathon".
It's absolutely hilarious but we don't have the heart to correct him.

I didn't know that Emily Sisson was a heel striker! Interesting info.

  9. I've never signed up for a trail race, so no DNFs for me. Les is actually wanting to do one, so if we both sign up I'm pretty sure it will be a go. It's been so fun getting him running on the trails. With degenerative discs, road running is a lot tougher on him. I runfess that I kind of love it when he's complaining about sore muscles the next day!

  10. Ah, the 5K marathon -- the only marathon I'll ever run at this point!
Reese's used to be my favorite. Probably still are now unless I can pick a dark chocolate Lindt truffle instead. ;-)

  11. Reese's yes. But not pumpkins, the white chocolate ghosties. Overall though I'm a peppermint patty girl.
Yes on chafing and always in the worst and weirdest of spots
Yes, always a run for everyone. Find it/embrace it. Actually had this convo on a run yesterday that it's more there's movement for everybody and no shame in opting not to run some days.

    1. When I was a kid, the worst candy was something called 'Circus Peanuts' and they were disgusting!

    2. They still are a thing, and they're still gross. See also, non chocolate Smarties!

  12. Backside chafing is awful! I love frozen Reese's cups. And Twix. And 100 Grands. Yum. I think you made the right call if your heart wasn't in it.
