Don't Count Me Out!

This week was remarkable for our wild weather! We had terrible thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday night--the sirens were blowing and while we didn't have a lot of damage, others around the area were not so lucky. By mid-week, the weather calmed down and we had some really pleasant conditions. I had to move my runs around to accommodate the conditions as well as some lingering soreness from a tough mid-week workout. I got it all done, though, and wrapped up the week with a really good run. At this point in my life, anytime I can finish a 10k in under an hour is a win.

What a way to make me feel like I'm still a runner!

Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: run 6.75 miles
Monday: Strength Training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: The Longest Mile
Thursday: trail run 6.75 miles
Friday: Yoga with Adriene
Saturday: run 6.2 miles

Oh dear. I woke up on Sunday morning very early--before 5 am--to the sound of thunder rumbling. We were up at the lake and the bedroom windows were open since there's no AC. I tried to go back to sleep but gave up once the wind started blowing. When it was over, we received close to 2 inches of rain. I had planned a trail run for that morning, but I'm pretty sure they were a mess. I laced up my road shoes and ran my route along the lake. I took it slow and used walk breaks for the hills. With the cooler temperatures, this run felt pretty good! I had no issues with my heart rate and felt like I could have gone farther! I even saw a few deer out feeding on the foliage. Initially, when I saw the one in the photo below, I thought it was a lawn ornament, lol!

On Monday, I was up and out the door early for CrossFit. I decided to do strength work in the back of the gym instead of the WOD. I repeated that posterior chain hypertrophy workout I've done a couple times this summer: 4 sets of 6-8 DB deadlifts alt with sumo squats. I used 25# DB in each hand for both lifts. I did 8 reps for the first set, increasing by 5 reps with each set as prescribed. Ouch. The second set consisted of 4 sets of 10 leg curls on a ball alternating with goblet squats (25#) with heels on a plate. The third set  was walking lunge steps 3 sets x 20m holding 2 DBs (15#) alternating with banded side steps 3 x 20m. Ouch again.

This week's summer challenge workout from CrossFit was the longest mile. The workout consisted of 400m each of broad jump burpees, walking lunges, bear crawls, and running. I decided to take it to the track today, figuring it would make it easier for me to keep it honest. Ok, keeping it honest, let me tell you this was way harder than I expected. I allowed myself a few steps between the burpees and the bear crawls--otherwise, I would have been there all day. Plus my hands would have been raw from the pavement. I finished in 46:07, which felt respectable.

As you might imagine, I woke up Thursday in a world of hurt after Wednesday's workout. My quads, ankles, and calves were really angry with me. My hands were sore as well. Since the weather was perfect, I thought an easy run on the trails would be ok. And it was. I took it slow, with a lot of walk breaks--there was a lot of mud and downed trees, so I actually didn't have a choice. I saw a few deer, including mama and her twins. I also spotted a total of 4 of those pink flamingos that have popped up in various locations over the past couple of years.

I was still feeling some pretty significant soreness on Friday so I pushed my run to Saturday, doing a 45 minute yoga for flexibility class with Adriene. I felt like a new woman! My legs felt loose and happy when I headed out to run on Saturday. I haven't had a run that felt this good for a long time. I was passed by a couple running slightly faster than me and on the way back, they caught me taking a selfie! Or should I say I caught them?

This photo made me laugh when I saw it! Not only did it catch the couple running through, but the proportions are off. Check out my freakishly tiny feet, lol

Good News!

On Monday, I had my annual mammogram and breast ultrasound, as well as my biannual DEXA scan. I received good news all around--my mammogram and ultrasounds were normal. While the DEXA scan shows that I have osteopenia, my scores were unchanged from 2 years ago. That's great news--it means that what I'm doing is helping keep my bones from demineralizing.

I've had quite a few mammograms and while having my breasts squished between two plates is not my favorite thing, I've never had one that hurt until this one. I had a biopsy a few years ago and the radiologist left a clip in my left breast to easily identify the area of concern. The tech was so determined to get it on the x-ray that she literally left bruises on my chest wall while manipulating my breast between the plates. Oh mylanta. I didn't cry, but I was close.

After the mammogram. I was so happy to be done.

How was your week? Did you have wild weather? Were you forced to change your workouts around? What's your favorite way to recover? When was your last mammogram?

I'm off work all week--yay! and I've got some fun things planned. Be sure to check my IG to see what's happening!

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. I’ve never had a mammogram that actually hurt. Good news that there are no changes. Always fab to finish a run feeling amazing. I’m guessing that won’t happen for me until October weather lol. It’s been quite the hot and humid few weeks. Have a great week ahead

  2. Good news on your screenings but yikes on that bruising mammogram!
Our weather was just hot this week. We had some rain yesterday, but just light showers.

  3. Great news on all the scans. I've never had a painful mammogram but I can just imagine. Ouchie! 400m of each of those exercises sounds brutal!

    1. I had serious DOMS for the rest of the week. I'm anxious to hear how other people fared with this workout! And also...what is in store for week 3?

  4. OMG- that really is "the longest mile." Running the last 400 meters must have been such a relief after the first three brutal 400s- or, I can also imagine my legs not wanting to move at all after all that. Congrats on getting it done!
That's good news on your mammogram and scan. I think it's pretty normal to be in the osteopenia range at our age- as long as it's not getting any worse, everything is good. My scan three years ago actually showed osteoporosis (yikes) but presumably because of some supplements I've been taking and lifestyle changes, my last scan showed so much improvement that I'm now back in the osteopenia range- hooray!

    1. I'm so glad to hear you were able to reverse your osteoporosis! My mom has severe osteoporosis and I'm going to try avoid it if I can!

  5. My mammograms always hurt...they tell me I'm really dense, LOL. We had wild weather here Monday as well. Thankfully, it hit after I'd made it home from work. And, it only lasted about 30 minutes. Max was not happy about it, though...

    1. With Cocoa being deaf now, we don't have to worry about thunder or fireworks bothering her!

  6. That's a lot of hard work for you this week, no wonder you were sore! I'm happy for your return to problem-free running. Also, great news about your scans! I haven't had a mammogram since before the pandemic, here in Ireland they only start screening after age 50 so I'll register for it now after the summer. In Sweden I've had a few - they've always been painful because that's simply how my breasts are.

    1. I've been having mammograms since I was 35--family history and dense breasts made me a candidate for early screening. I also have to get an ultrasound along with the mammogram!

  7. Congrats first off for your good news with your medical exams. It's always such a relief. Sorry about the bruising. I sometimes get sore, but with the newer better equipment it seems less of an issue. I'm quite small breasted and they switch to the smaller plates/paddles usually for me which I think hurts less. Hope the bruising is short lived. And congrats on the run, but oh that work out...my knees and hands would be raw. Though hopefully the track was sorta soft compared to a path or street pavement.

    1. Funny you should mention the pavement--my hands and knees did get sore, so I moved to the grass along the track for most of the workout.

    2. Good idea to move to the grass!

  8. That mile, jeez! I have had one mammogram at 51, I think we get them every 3 or 5 years till 70 (I think) after which we can request them. It didn't hurt and everyone said it would! I prioritised sleep over running today - I'm still rehabbing my knee and I am doing the foam rolling and exercises, but I'm seriously wondering if I bother now just to have something go wrong. Your note about DEXA scans reminds me I'll have to make sure I replace it with something load-bearing. Ah well.

  9. Good news on that mammogram! I'm due for my first one in a few months and not looking forward to it. Esp after hearing about your pain and brusing? Yikes! And lol to the long mile - that is so true!

    1. I've had them every year since i was 35 and I've never had one that hurt before. I think it was the technique of the technician--hopefully it will never happen again.

  10. Yay for a week off from work - enjoy! Good news on your mammogram, but yowza, that sounds painful.

Your longest mile workout sounds exhausting (and very clever).

  11. This was a great week, Wendy! So nice to finish it off with a good run.

I've never heard of the longest mile - I'm sure our CrossFit box back in Cape Town did it. How does it work? Is it one move (eg burpees) for the whole length of 400m or do you get to alternate the moves within each of the 400m?
I had my first mammogram ever 5 months ago, imagine! It was very uncomfortable...ugh. So glad you got the green light on all the scans!

    1. Reflecting back on the longest mile--I wish I had broken up the 400m movements into 100m segments. There weren't specific instructions, so I assume that would have been ok. I did it as written and it has been a long time since I experienced such painful post-workout soreness!

  12. My last mammogram was supposed to be last month as a follow up from my biopsy in January, but my MBI said that everything looked good so I didn't have to get one! Interesting that the clip would hurt. I wonder if I'll run into that issue. I don't think mine have ever hurt either. Just a bit uncomfortable. That's great news about your DEXA scan results!

    1. It wasn't the clip that hurt, it was the technician's ability to get that part of my breast in the machine.

  13. I have to get a mammogram, but I have to figure out where to go that is covered by my insurance. My doctor is, but the place she sent me to is not. So stupid. But also, I don't want another $700 medical bill, you know? I'm glad yours was all clear, even if it was painful.

Fortunately, the bulk of our bad weather comes in the afternoons and evenings so I can still get my workouts in. It's been brutal over here, with storms, rain, hail, tornadoes, and all the things. Enough!
