What Next?

Living in the Midwest, we're used to wild weather swings. This past week was off-the-charts bonkers. Considering what we've experienced this year so far, that's saying a lot. It was record-breaking warm, so wild weather was to be expected, but a DUST STORM? That was a first for me. I'm glad I wasn't outside when it blew in. I wear hard contacts, and when dust gets in my eyes, it's a very painful experience. Back in the day when my boys played baseball and the bored players kicked up the dust on the diamond, I'd have to run to the car with my eyes closed to avoid the dreaded contact attack. IYKYK

Anyhoo, the dust storm was weird. I wondered if the locusts were next. Is it the end of times? Not to get all deep and philosophical, but fellow Midwesterners have to agree, we've been subjected to some really extreme conditions these past couple of years. Mother Nature's got some splaining to do.

Meanwhile, today we're in the 50s, after breaking records for highs in the 90s just 2 days ago. The wind continues to blow. Dare I ask: what next?

Weekly Rundown

Sunday: trail run 8.6 miles
Monday: Strength Training
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: trail run 9.1 miles
Thursday: Strength training
Friday: Run 6 miles
Saturday: Yoga with Adriene

Sunday was Mother's Day, and the day started with a trail run with my Trail Sisters! There were 7 of us and we ran the main loop for 5.5 miles. When we finished, I headed back on the trail, this time into the woods on the single track for another 3 miles. It was the best of both worlds and I was happy to have a little more time on this beautiful morning!

On Monday, I went to the gym for auxiliary strength training. This was a repeat workout from last winter, but there were a few modifications. In addition, I was feeling fatigued and dropped the weight on one of the movements.

Set 1 4 rounds :40 sandbag cleans (40#)/:10 transition/:40 med ball (6#-->12#) shelf situp/:30 rest
Set 2 4 rounds :40 weighted ball (25-->15#) to chest reverse lunges/:10 transition/:40 single leg slam ball (25-->15#)/:30 rest
Set 3 4 rounds :40 side lunge with knee drive/:10 transition/:40 battle ropes/:30 rest
Set 4 4 rounds :40 weighted ball to chest (30#) good mornings/:10 transition/:40 depth drops (24")

Wednesday morning was cool but very humid. I started out early, hoping to see some deer--maybe some babies--but I didn't see one deer on my run. I did see the sandhill crane couple, Bob and Sandy, with their tiny babies! Another runner cautioned me not to get too close--Bob went after her when she tried to run past them. I also spotted a red-tailed hawk and a Baltimore Oriole. Other than that, this was an uneventful run. I stopped often to snap photos of all the blooms and shrooms. As usual, I ran farther than I intended, but isn't that the best part of trail running?

Look closely to see the little sandhill babies!

Chicken of the Woods mushroom--it is edible if you choose to eat it

Week 3 version 2 of auxiliary strength at the gym wrapped up with a challenging upper body workout:

Set 1: 4 rounds: :40 alt. single arm on the slam ball push-ups/ :10 transition/ :40 banded pvc lat pull-downs
Set 2: 4 rounds: :40 alt. front/lateral dumbbell (12->10#) arm raises/ :10 transition/ :40 med ball bench throw (12#)--these were new to us. Very fun but I did not throw mine up as high as the guy in the video!
Set 3: 4 rounds: :40 renegade row (15#) with push-up/ :10 transition/ :40 russian twists (15# DB)
Set 4: 4 rounds :40 hollow body slamball press (20#)/ :10 transition/ :40 kneeling lateral slamballs (20#)
*30 second rest between rounds, 2 minute rest between sets

Lots of core work made it challenging. So did the renegade rows.

Speaking of challenging, Friday's run on the bike path was a challenge. I wore my magic shoes, but my legs weren't buying what they were selling. It was a beautiful morning, but I think the humidity took a toll on me. I couldn't even get decent photos. It would have been great to stop and walk, but I had to get home to get ready for work. So I dug deep and pushed through it. I'm glad I could do it, but man, it was tough. Next time will be better!

How was your week? Are you having wild weather swings? Tornadoes? A dust storm?
Would you eat mushrooms from the woods if you knew they were edible? (I wouldn't)
Have you ever been attacked by a bird protecting their offspring? (I have--those red-winged blackbirds are aggressive!)

I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.

  1. We got very warm very quickly and have had lots of humidity already. I feel like it’s our normal I just try to ignore it. Looks like the weather did not stop you from getting out and enjoying trails!

    1. You know me--it takes a lot to keep me inside! That dust storm probably would have been a deal breaker--although maybe I could have worn goggles!

  2. Ugh our weather has been awful! We had tornado warnings while I was away but no tornados thankfully. The weather was pretty nice in Cleveland. By the time I got back home on Friday night, it was very windy and chilly. I woke to a feels like temp of 33 yesterday and it barely warmed up. I want the 80s back! I opted to do a Caroline Girvan lower body workout yesterday and today I will run. It looks better outside today than yesterday. I agree that the weather has been especially bad in the Midwest this spring!

Your Mother’s Day trail run sounded perfect. And those sand crane babies are so cute!!

  3. Our temps have dropped today... but that humidity this past week killed me. I've lost my tolerance I guess.
    Nope on the mushrooms.
    Never attacked by birds.. yet.

    1. I've never had a tolerance for the humidity--and that's why Friday's run did me in!

  4. You picked a great way to start your Mother's Day with a trail run. Those sandhill crane babies are so cute (their parents are pretty good looking, too)! Growing up, after a warm spring rain, my dad would go out into the woods looking for morel mushrooms for my mom to fry. I think she rolled them in corn meal or flour first. I didn't like them at the time, but bet I'd love them now sautéed in olive oil. If I were at the farm and saw them today, I'd definitely gather them to eat.

    1. There's a big morel season in the Midwest, and it can get pretty dicey with some of the hunters. They are very territorial!

  5. Thanks for the link to the medicine ball bench throws! I’ve never tried those either - they look tough. I’d probably have to start with the lightest ball available, ha!
I totally get what you mean about having the “magic shoes” but still ending up with a slog of a run. I guess those are the dues we pay for the great runs that do feel magical.
Love that the sandhill crane pair have names! Did you name them yourselves, or are they already known as Bob and Sandy?

    1. One of the other Deer Grove runners called them that and it just kind of stuck, lol!

  6. Oh, those baby birds are so cute! To answer your question, no I've never been attacked by a bird, and no I wouldn't eat wild mushrooms (because I don't like mushrooms at all). AND we did not have any crazy weather, which is lucky because we were traveling back and forth to Texas. Texas seems like a place for dust storms and tornadoes, so I'm glad we didn't have any!
Your trail runs look wonderful, as usual. And that slog-ish road run- I've had plenty of those!

    1. I'm so surprised you don't eat mushrooms, being vegan! I never liked them until the last couple of years. But no, I wouldn't eat wild mushrooms.

  7. Total agreement on the weather! It was 41F this morning for my walk…What The What??? I had to pull out a puffer vest, LOL. I’m surprised we haven’t seen any dust storms ((yet)) given all the wind we’ve had. Thankfully, the humidity has stayed away thus far…

    1. I refuse to wear long tights or any kind of vest this time of year. Once I get moving, I warm up pretty quickly!

  8. You are right, the weather has been wild! I saw pictures of the dust storm in Illinois, beyond crazy. Can't imagine how bad that was for anyone with health issues like asthma, or COPD etc. The damage done in Kentucky and St. Louis was awful, and the death toll. Our daughter lives in St. Louis and her house was ok, but just one block away the trees that were downed blocked the roads. Lots of damage around her. We've had more rain than normal here and lots of wind. I literally thought I got slightly airborne yesterday while out walking. I would not eat mushrooms found in the woods. I have been attacked from a mama bird. Several years ago I was mowing the back yard and as I came under one of the tree a bird started making a racket and swooped down at me. When I backed up I realized there was a nest right above me. Had to avoid that area for awhile.

    1. Was it a red winged blackbird? They are not nice--and I've been pecked in the head by them in the past! Yikes!
