When I was in the woods on Sunday, I noticed a foul smell in several locations. I suspected dead animals, but didn't see any on my run that day. On Wednesday's run, I discovered the reason for the smell when I spotted a dead deer next to one of the creeks. My heart sank. I have been reading about EHD-epizootic hemorrhagic disease--in deer in Wisconsin and learned that it has also affected deer in northern Illinois. I suspected EHD in the deer and reached out to the forest preserve district office to inform them of what I found. I received a thoughtful answer to my concerns. I was hoping they'd remove the deer to keep the disease from spreading throughout the herd, but I was told that the disease doesn't spread from deer to deer. Instead, the disease spreads via infected 'midges', which I was told will die off during the first frost.
Um, ok, but don't those infected midges bite other deer and spread the disease? Oh dear, deer...
Usually our first frost occurs in mid-October, but with climate change, who knows when it will happen. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it's sooner rather than later. Who knew I'd be wishing for an early cold spell!
I've been running in these woods since the pandemic, and I've become very attached to this preserve and all the creatures that live there--especially the deer. You all know I just love seeing them on my runs. I hope that this disease does not wipe out the herd. It's so heartbreaking!
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Trail Run 7 miles
Monday: Yoga with Adriene, Strength Training
Tuesday: Fluid running
Wednesday: Trail run 7.8 miles
Thursday: Yoga with Adriene, Strength Training
Friday: Run 3.8 miles
Saturday: Ice Age Trail Full Moon Hike 1.8 miles
It rained nonstop all weekend. I didn't mind being stuck inside on Saturday because I
was exhausted from the week and the family stress. But by Sunday morning, I was ready to go outside. It was still warm-ish, so the rain didn't bother me at all. It was quiet, although I did see a few people on the trails. I also saw a few deer, including the triplets sans spots. They're getting so big! Mama was in the background, keeping an eye on them. I also saw this doe who 'charged' towards me, trying to intimidate me, I guess! I didn't move, just smiled and snapped a few photos. She finally got bored and moseyed off through the woods. It was fun watching her!

Fall is slowly moving in, but I still found some colorful mushrooms and fungi hanging on. The berry game is strong, so the deer will have lots to eat as the weather cools down. What a wonderful morning on the trails!
On Monday, we started a new, abbreviated strength cycle to prepare for powerlifting in 2 weeks. YAY!
We rotated through 4 stations 4 times:
-4 x8 per leg landmine clean and press (45#)
-4 x10 goblet squats (20#)
-AMRAP ladder drills
-Laps slamball broad jumps
We finished up a Tabata of 1-leg V-ups alternating with push-ups. This got spicy in a hurry!
I was excited to return to the preserve on Wednesday for another run! I felt like I was coming down with something and was feeling fatigued, so I decided to do a run-hike, taking it slow and being a 'noticer', as one of my running friends calls me. I did see a deer running through the woods, but she was flying--so fun to watch--and I didn't have the opportunity to get a photo. I saw a red shouldered hawk--a new hawk to me-- and lots of squirrels gathering nuts and dropping them on my head, lol. A dragonfly landed on my wrist--it matched my shirt-- and a yellow jacket stung my ankle. Yep, it's fall.

Thursday's strength work was 3 rotations:
-4 x8 seated press (20#) per arm
-3 xMax effort (5 banded) pull-ups
-4 x10 per side medball (12#) twist throws
This was followed by an E3MOM of :20 assault bike sprints x5
When I stepped out the door for my Friday morning run around the neighborhood, I could not believe the sky. Instead of my usual route, I sped off to the baseball field, about a 1/2 mile away, to catch this amazing morning sky. I snapped some photos before heading down the road towards the big park where I take so many of my running photos. By the time I got there, the red skies had cleared. I felt so grateful that I was able to witness that beautiful sky! The rest of my run was uneventful--in fact, I took it easy on this run before heading home to get ready for work.
We were up at the lake on Saturday, and while I wasn't feeling great, I decided to participate in the Lodi Chapter of the Ice Age Trail's monthly full moon hike. It was something I've been wanting to do. The conditions were near perfect--just a few scattered clouds, so I joined about 40 other people and hiked the 1.8 mile loop on the marsh side of the trail. I'm so glad I did--the moon showed up for us!

Off the trail...
By the end of the week, the virus took hold and instead of staying home to run with my Trail Sisters, the hubs and I went up to the lake. The weather was beautiful--seasonally cool, but sunny. We spent the afternoon outside to soak up the sunshine and later took the boat out on the lake. Summer sure flew by, didn't it? I packed away my waterski. Until next summer....
How was your week? If you were to give the triplets a band name, what would it be? Have you ever heard of EHD? Have you ever done a full moon hike? How are you enjoying this beautiful fall weather?
I'm wrapping up my September reads and will post my Mini Book Reviews on Friday!
I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.
Oh those poor deer! How sad! I hope it doesn’t impact your deer population too much. I had not heard of that disease. I wonder if it’s in Minnesota, too…. That photo of the deer does look like an album cover!!
ReplyDeleteThat sunrise is gorgeous! We had a pretty sunrise on Friday but not nearly as beautiful as yours was!
I got a flare this week in my right middle finger. Sigh. I was able to get in for an injection which helped. I am guessing the flare happened because of the stressful week of travel the previous week. Flares are often my bodies way of saying - ‘hey, you are doing too much/asking too much of yourself.’ I fly to NYC today as I speak at another client event tomorrow. But I LOVE going to NYC so am looking forward to it more than other work trips I have planned.
That sunrise was fire! and the weather that followed was rain. I thought for sure we'd get storms, but no, just a really amazing sky.
DeleteThat morning sky, Wendy!! Absolutely spectacular!
ReplyDeleteI also like the photo with the dragonfly and your matching shirt. Well done on getting that photo - it's a good thing it landed on your left arm so that you could take the pic (I'm assuming you're right-handed). Being a "noticer" for a change definitely has its perks!
We had a beautiful full moon yesterday evening with clear skies and even when we got up in the morning, it was still shining bright and big. Did you take the moon photo with your phone?
I am right handed! But terribly uncoordinated, so yes, it was a minor achievement for me to capture that photo. And yes, that full moon photo with with my iPhone! I was so pleased.
DeleteI have not heard of EHD. It sounds brutal.
ReplyDeleteThat red sky is amazing. I saw similar photos from NYC but didn’t catch anything like that around here.
Unfortunately I spent most of the week in front of my work computer, but I always got out for my morning walks with Scooby.
I hadn't heard of EHD until this year, but it's looking to be a very bad year for the deer. I am a little afraid to return to the preserve this week.
DeleteWe went from Summer to Fall seemingly overnight. 90s on Monday, 80s on Tuesday, 70s on Wednesday! I am so glad for the change. I was in Sevierville for a retreat with some ladies from our church. (Dolly's hometown on 9-25!) We drove through some of the Smoky Mountains looking for bears and were rewarded with a mama and 2 cubs. That evening we strolled around our cabin area and saw a larger bear checking out cars.
ReplyDeleteWe're all enjoying this cooler weather as well. I'd love to go to the Smokey Mountains--you're lucky you are so close by!
DeleteWe have so many deer around it’s gotten way out of control and dangerous for drivers. Sounds like you had a rough week I hope this week is better for you all around
ReplyDeleteI'm recovering from all the stress of the past couple of weeks, but came down with a virus. It's not too bad, but my voice is shot, lol
DeleteEeek, blood sucking dragonflies! haha! Odd about colors on that pic. Great sunrise picture, those colors are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of EHD. It sounds pretty bad!
Summer did fly by. We will be closing up our pool soon. Always a bittersweet event!
Yes, the end of summer is definitely bittersweet. This summer was so hot and humid, I'm not too sad to see it go.
DeleteI've not heard about that deer disease and have no idea if it's here on the east coast or not. Sorry you had to run upon one of its victims.
ReplyDeleteCocoa is looking a little smug in that picture, like, "HaHa, I'm boating and you're not!" LOL
Just think, you learned something new today! I did a Google search and yes, EHD in in Virginia this year.
DeleteYour photos are BEAUTIFUL. One thing I love about having a blog is that it turns me into a "noticer." I doubt I would be looking around as much and taking as many pictures if I weren't thinking about posting them.
ReplyDeleteTo answer some of your questions, I've never heard of EHD and it sounds like it won't affect the deer down here. I hope your frost comes soon so not too many deer are affected!
We are... NOT enjoying beautiful fall weather. But that's okay. Cooler weather is coming... next month, hopefully.
I agree with you--I post my photos on IG and I definitely look for things that would be interesting in my posts. It's made me a noticer as well as a much better photographer! And ironically, when I'm taking selfies, people often ask if I want them to take my photo. I've learned to say no, because I've gotten some really bad results. LOL
DeleteThat sounds scary about the deer disease. I hope you get an early frost to kill off the midgets. They are quite nasty insects.
ReplyDeleteThe dragonfly on the other hand! They're so beautiful. Isn't that colour just the shadow of the dragonfly?
We have lovely autumn weather here. Early in the week it was very foggy in the mornings but cleared up to beautiful sunny days. And it's still quite warm too. I wouldn't mind to have it like this for a while!
Yes, I think that pink is the shadow from the dragonfly but weird that it's along my sleeve line as well. Glad to hear that you are enjoying beautiful weather too!
DeleteSo many great pics! That sunrise capture is amazing! I’m always amazed at how colorful & vibrant the sunrise (or sunset) can be. The poor deer; I would not have done well discovering that!
ReplyDeleteI didn't do well and struggled with the images in my mind all day!
DeleteWhat a wonderful sunrise!
