It's a week like this that reminds me of how much running does for me. Sure, there are physical fitness benefits from running--we all know about that. But the main reason I started running and why I still do is for my mental health. This week my husband had his back surgery after that incident he had in August showed he had multiple herniated discs and spinal cord compression. He ended up having laminectomies at L3, L4, and L5, all done as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. As a seasoned, jaded medical professional, I fully admit to being awed and amazed by his surgeon.
While he's been doing well, he's not able to do a whole lot without pain. He's not a complainer, but if I'm being honest, he's been a little grumpy.
I took most of the week off to take care of him but was thankful to be able to continue my workouts as usual. While I missed Wednesday's trail run when I took him downtown for his surgery, I made up for it on Friday. That run was everything I needed. I had some good workouts at CrossFit that filled me up as well.
Weekly Rundown:
Sunday: Ice Age Trail Run 7 miles
Monday: CrossFit
Tuesday: Fluid Running
Wednesday: off for hub's surgery
Thursday: CrossFit
Friday: trail run 7.5 miles
Saturday: rest, work
At the end of last week's post, I shared that we were up at the lake and it was REALLY cold. When I headed out for my trail run on Sunday, it was 5F with a 10 mph breeze. I dressed like I do in the dead of winter--I can't believe it's this cold already! I brought the North Face thermoball to the lake and put it to use, along with my fleece Athleta Rainier tights. I wore my face mask too. I never was cold or hot--to quote Goldilocks, it was 'just right'. So many IAT segments were closed for deer hunting, but thankfully the Gibraltar Segment was open!
I parked at the Slack Road trailhead and ran the connecting road to Gibraltar Rock. It was very still in the woods and I was the only person there. The sun started to peek through the trees and as I climbed to the top, that golden glow lit up everything! It was breathtaking. I made my way across the bluff and around the back of the rock, where I spotted some guys climbing to the top.
I retraced my steps on the connecting road to run the Slack Road portion. It was peaceful and very meditative. When I finished this run, I felt very content. I am so glad I pushed myself to run in the cold because it was such a beautiful morning!
On Monday's agenda: CrossFit and 2RM deadlifts! I focused on form this time and finished my lifts injury-free. After struggling with 195#, SJ, who was coaching the class, challenged me to reset and get out of my head. I did and got that barbell off the ground. I could only do 1 rep, but that made me happy! The MetCon was a short little 3 rounds for time (13 minute cap) of 15 burpee box jumps, 12 ball over shoulders, and 20 lunges holding the ball. SJ told us to go light on the ball, so I used the 15# and finished this in 9:47.
CrossFit had 2 RM bench presses on Thursday! As I did with the deadlifts on Monday, I really concentrated on my form and had a new PR: 90# for 2 bench presses! The MetCon was Fran, a 21-15-9 burner of thrusters and pull-ups. Coach Kate encouraged us to do the rep scheme that would allow us to go unbroken for the entire workout and finish within 10 minutes, so I did a 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 and finished in 6:48, using a 35# empty barbell for the thrusters and jumping pull-ups from a box. Whew!
On Friday morning, after making sure my hubs was ok, I laced up and took my feet to my trails. It was cold--16F--but sunny. There was a little breeze, but once I was moving, I warmed up and it didn't feel bad. I was excited to see a lot of deer all over the preserve! Most of them wouldn't hang out for me to get a good photo, but I did manage to get one of this group of 4.
I also saw a red-breasted woodpecker (confirmed by my son and the Merlin app) on the trail. I couldn't get too close, but close enough to get a photo. What a beautiful bird! And what a beautiful morning on the trails. The sun made this run feel good and I sure needed it!
Off the Road
Cocoa is keeping watch on her dad....
How was your week? Have you ever felt like you really needed a run? I am so grateful this body lets me still move like I do. Did you have any interesting wildlife sightings?
It's starting to warm up and as you read this, I'm back in the city, meeting up with Coco for a run on the Riverwalk and along the lakefront. I've been looking forward to this all week! I can't believe we've never met IRL--we've certainly been blogger friends for more years than I can count.
I'm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Rundown.
I’m so glad your husband is doing OK — must be all the TLC from you and Cocoa — so cute!
ReplyDeleteOMG after running in those temps are you wearing shorts today?
Can’t wait to see you!
So glad we finally got to meet! i really enjoyed our run this morning. Thanks for indulging my need for photos!
DeleteHow fun that you and Coco are running together today. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear that your husband is recovering nicely from his surgery. Hope all continues to go well.
Fingers crossed for all good things!
DeleteYou run in some beautiful areas! I am glad, too, to be able to run- I couldn't run for months earlier this year due to Achilles heel surgery. I am super slow now and can't go far but I am grateful to be able to move. I also quite like running in the cold if I have the right amount and type of clothes on! I hope your husband recovers quickly from surgery.
ReplyDeleteI'm slowing down as well, but I do love the feeling of running!
DeleteI can't believe you and Coco have never met! so cool that it's finally happening.
ReplyDeleteWell done on that deadlift - you really inspire me to lift heavier!
Wishing a speedy recovery to your husband!
I don't think I'll get to 200# this year, but I am very happy with that lift on Thursday.
DeleteI need a run almost every day lol. But you've been going through quite a bit. I'm glad your husband is recovering well, and even more glad he has you and cocoa to care for him. Why are dogs the best caretakers?
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful views all around. Am I crazy or are the skies more beautiful in cold weather?
The sun is such an infrequent visitor in the winter here, so maybe that's why the skies look more beautiful!
DeleteGlad your husband is doing alright. And thank goodness you have exercise as an outlet to keep you feeling alright.
ReplyDeleteI always have leaned into running when life gets stressful--this week was just another reminder why!
DeleteI would also be a little grumpy if I had back surgery! I’m sure he appreciates having his own FT nurse. We also had unusually cold temps for us but not like yours! thankfully, back to normal cold today and it feels great
ReplyDeleteI don't feel appreciated :p but I'm keeping him moving!
DeleteYay for a fun Coco meet-up! Yes, this week was frigid! Thanks fully, it started warming here late Friday, and yesterday (and today) are feeling so much better. I did wear shorts yesterday and only two I light layers this morning…ahhh the freedom of shedding the layers is euphoric, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! Our run in the city was layer free and I even sweated. It was the best.
DeleteI hope you and husband get through this recovery well and quickly! I didn't get out to run this weekend or even volunteer at parkrun as we've had a really quite severe storm - with lots of trees down etc - and I have been too worried about stuff flying around the place. I need a run, too, so hopefully will get out tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I hope you are safe!
DeleteIt's subsided now. We were OK, next door lost most of their fence the other side and the roof of their outhouse, and lots of trees fell on the park where my friend with RA lives, including one falling on a block of flats, but no one or flats injured.
DeleteThat morning run looks beautiful, but OMG, 5F! That's really cold!
ReplyDeleteBig yay about your success with the deadlift! Such things can really get into our heads!
The stress-relieving effect of running was a main reason why I wanted to continue to run. It was such a good way to clear my head. Now I've found that lifting heavy, really heavy like I do this month, has a similar effect. It's a blessing to be healthy enough to push our bodies like this. It sounds like your husband is doing ok after the surgery - hope the recovery goes well.
I saw you and Coco on Instagram! How great that you got to meet!
I also find that going to CrossFit and pushing myself through the workout has helped me manage stress as well. It seems like anything that makes us push ourselves hard will work!
DeleteYes, I know that feeling when you really need a run! Both of yours sound amazing, especially the first one with the sunrise.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet it would have been easier to go to work this week than stay home and take care of your husband- sounds like a very challenging situation. I hope this surgery resolved the issue and that he feels better SOON.
I can't wait to hear all about your run with Coco! It's funny that you've never met, since she travels to Chicago often. Well, today was the day!
It's not easy for me to get downtown during the week, which is when she's usually here. I'm so glad we could make it happen!
DeleteOh yes, running is a wonderful outlet. I'm glad your husband is doing OK and that's great you can help him out so much. I'm sure it is super frustrating to be in recovery and not able to move a whole lot. Sending positive vibes for speedy recovery!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have an iPhone there is now an icon below the picture which will identify animals and landmarks! Super cool AI feature.
Thanks for the good wishes and that heads up on that new AI feature!
DeleteGreat! Running is also something fascinating and relaxing for me. I run all year round, only in winter I have to take more care of my comfort to make running more enjoyable. But good clothing, a woolen hat and gloves make it easier for me :)
